Engine out
well many questions :
to Robokill :
yes it could be the best possibility , but these engines are so expensive here . It could be the solution, but to take it apart , I think it's too expensive .the best solution would be to transfer the complete 20v , but I can't do it in my
competition class!

To The Doctor , no sorry , I kept (don't know why) head , but they're all out .

To Rasteirinho : I 'm not far enough to see where the rod broke .
The piston is up . bearings and "rod sub-assy are gone!!!!
My max rev is 7500rpm and I don't go there very often .
I don't know my compression ration, but I use stock piston and TRD 0.8mm head gasket . The head is very little shaved .
It's the third engine I ran in this congiguration .
The last break was due to a very bad timing advance adjustment (done during a special stage , distributor failed) and a piston was removed with a nice hole (overheating) All this made on 15km !

Taking apart is going on , but very hard as the"garage" has no heating , it's about -5c° there . brrrrr. All tools sticking to hands !!
But I found another hole in the block in the opposite side of the first one .
That won't change much , But I'll use it in Spring , with flowers !!!

To be continued
Phil

Thanks for your response

I have 42/20 crank and rod/piston set mate, though I cant lie to you its kinda messed up where it bolts to the block/ bearing area (sorry dont know technical word in english, anyone here? )

I believe you have to machine the crank, but ill sell it to you cheap.

Did you mishift? For example instead of selecting 5th gear you selected 3rd (coming from 4th)?

I ask because 2 weeks ago i saw an engine (K series engine from a race Starlet KP61) with similar damages and it was caused by mishifting...

To Rasteirinho: well no , i Was in third gear and wasn't shifting .
I don't have the news pics , but I go on dismantling. Head looks ok , but I must check valves . The rest will go to the horror museum .
Rod from cylinder 4 is broken , no sign of sub-assy and of course bearings!
Piston is out , so does the cylinder and crankshaft .
And as there's a hole aside 3rd cylinder , i guess , there is some damages on piston n°3 too.

To Johnny ae86 : don't understand well what you're telling me :
Is the crank damaged on the journals (where the bearings rotates) or elsewhere.

look at the pic: n° 1 is main crankshaft journal
n° 2 is conrod journal
Or may be easier , if you have pics about 42/20mm crankshaft and rods
Thanks and regards
Phil

JOURNALS thats it!!! I was missing the technical word! must buy english mechanical dictionary Smile

Yeah, the crank has some scratches on the 4th main crank journal (due to a bad selection of bearing) but everything else is ok.

Ill take some pics.... next year Thumbs up!

the following pics , at the end of engine taken apart.
As I was thinking , nothing can be reused ,

The worse is that it only had so few km .
Must try to find parts now .
Have a nice year ( mine began bad )

Really strange pics...

I never saw nothing like this and i must tell you i've already saw many broken engines...

However, imho i think you had some lubrification problem...

well , lubrification problems , maybe , but only on cylinder n°4 . No sign of problems on the 3 other cylinders , and no" blue sign" on crankshaft journal .
It's difficult to say , as the rod is broken , and broken parts are gone ...
If it was an old engine with many km , that wouldn't bother me , but this engine was rebuild (by me) 1000km ago .And it was running perfectly until that .

I'm by no means an expert, but the one thing that looks strangest to me is the piston pin in the broken piston no.4. How is it possible to get this hot enough to go all blue? Huh I'm thinking this has to have gone blue BEFORE the rod broke?

The broken ringland on piston no3 I've seen several times on stock toyota pistons (on different engine models) after mild/medium detonation.

for the piston pin , don't know how it's blue . when assembling it piston was heated and pin stay a night in freezer. I didn't do that job myself and may be it was a reused pin ( don't know why as a new piston comes with new axle).

For the break between rings path, I already had that on 2 pistons , and the first time occur with my first break , when timing was totally false .
The pistons brand is Mahle , and not Toyota
