Custom Dash Cluster
Hi all.

So I've been having an issue wth my dash Mainly the dash back lights not working. and i thought that seeing as the RPM and speedo isn't the most accurate on the 86 i would do a custom cluster. Something like below.

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Custom Dash Cluster]ae86 cluster by ae86-kazi,

Question i have, Is there anything (wiring wise) that i need to take away? do the block connectors at the bottom of the OEM gauge stay etc etc?

TIA

I would say it all depends on the gauges you are going to use...
First of all: if you are creating it from scratch, you probably are going to either use the existing header (male connector) and your current cluster, or splice out the original female connector and wire it in separate connector pairs for each gauge.
It also depends on what type of gauges you are going to use: the fuel gauge of the AE86 is basically an ammeter, so replace it with an gauge that is measuring resistance and not one that is measuring voltage. (or use the OEM one like in your photo) I believe the same applies to the oil pressure sensor: it is resistance based.
Also the speedometer of the AE86 is cable operated (also on the digital gauge clusters), so if you would use a digital item like in the picture above the easiest would be to go for a rotational sensor on the propshaft. That would mean you have to install a new wire for that as well.

Thanks Banpei.

Gauge wise, i would prob go Defi or Stack. I would leave the OEM fuel gauge but replace the oil press and engine temp wth aftermarket. Could the RPM and Speedo not be wired directly into the ecu? I'm currently running and apexi RSM so i know what speed etc I'm doing and thats how I've done it.

Why not run something like this? 1 unit that runs everything except the fuel level? Pretty sure the ECU gets the speed (SPD) signal from the factory
speedo, not the other way round. And your vehicle regs most likely
will say you have to have a tamperproof odometer. Probably why
your pic shows an old school mechanical odo above the digital speedo.

Might be a good idea to check that out with your MOT inspector.

I dont understand why you would prefer this over just fixing your stock cluster.
Have you really checked everything there is to check? It might be a really small thing.

I have check everything there is to check. Currently the clocks are stripped down as much as they can be. My next step would be to get a replacement set of clocks, But giving that the 86 clocks aren't the most accurate in terms of tacho and speedo, then the next things to do would be to get aftermarket gauges.
