Core Plugs
Does anyone replace these during a rebuild if they aren't already leaking?

I'm not going to be but have been slammed for it.

If there's nothing wrong with them, I dont see why they should be replaced. If you're going the extra mile then why not, but for a simple rebuild I dont see any harm in leaving the old ones in.

If someone has a good reason why they should be replaced then I'm all ears.

Ya feel lucky punk? Because if you aren't, they will.

I thought replacement was SOP.
I would never give a second thought about replacement and I don't know anyone who would not replace every core/freeze/welsh plug that was more then a few years old.

Sometimes they are removed to allow access for internal cleaning.

Removing them for better cleaning access I get. But the feeling lucky argument doesn't quite tick my 'adequately argumented' checkbox.

From personal experiences you have a bigger chance of failures on things you tamper with than those that you don't touch (provided it is not a part that will wear out normally).

I'm rebuilding a volvo engine with the original core plugs left untouched at the moment so if I'm taking chances I would like to know. Not many of my friends who do their own rebuilds bother to replace the plugs, and I haven't heard of any freeze plug failure ever.

on some engines they are quite prone to leaking or rusting through (Datsun L-series for instance), but on a Toyota i NEVER heard from it, yet. I'd leave them in Smile
