Brake woes
There appear to be at least two different types of brake booster fitted to the AE86
The two different ones I know of have a different fitting for the master cylinder, one has the two studs level the other has the studs at about 30 degrees to each other. Can anyone tell me if the two are interchangable please. (apart from the master cylinder fitting being different) An analogue brain in a digital World |

I thought I would just put a repair kit into the old master cylinder until I found out the price of the kit from Toyota.

There are other that will fit but dont quote me, or go pedal box for competition car? these are ok but require remote resevoirs,

There is another one with 4 bolts fitted to some of the kouki models
Ignore the filth, it's hard to keep clean around here with all the sand. AE86 ex-daily |

Ive heard that Hilux + other fit & have the same stroke.
R32 skyline non-abs also fits but you need to modify your lines as the nissan are rear-front left-front right as in 3 hoses off the master cylinder. If you do go for the pedal box there is a bit of work involved + remove the clutch pedal first to make life easier. An 86 is for Life, not just for Christmas |

I think the pedal box thing may have to wait as I have a rally in a couple of weeks but by all accounts it is a mod. worth doing.
Just been offered a 4 bolt servo / master cylinder combo like the one pictured by Bean Bandit, I wonder how common they are and would it be more rigid than the 2 bolt one ? An analogue brain in a digital World |

If its a road legal car you wont be able to get an MOT on a car with a pedal box as the booster would need to be removed. Unless you go to a "friendly" mot centre that is willing to overlook it.

I wonder if Toyota standardised the brake servo's later on as the 4
bolt one looks very similar to the AW11 MR2 MK1b one. If so could the AW11 master cylinder be used ?? Oh and the 4 bolt fitting thing ? I reckon it is because the later master cylinder is made from steel rather than alloy and it weighs a ton by comparison ! A lot of weight to hang on just 2 studs. Bump. My brake booster seems to be failing as well (randomly) and need to find a solution ASAP. Thanks!
