1987 uk Corolla
Hi, I’ve finally started on the car, cleared around it and raised it up a bit. It doesn’t seem too bad from a quick look but we shall see what we find underneath. The fuel tank has been removed and doesn’t seem too bad but had to cut one fuel pipe to remove it. Any advice on cleaning out and treating the inside would be appreciated. The fuel filler pipe will be a problem as the seal is not good and I understand isn’t available. The pockets are holed but repairable hopefully by someone with no experience of bodywork. But the small brackets just behind the wheel at the front of the wheel arch will be a problem. I’ll investigate a bit more over the next few days before I decide how to proceed.

The pockets are a bit worse than I thought but the right side although looking worse, will I think be the easiest to repair. The left side is holed on both the inner and outer panels and the bottom corner bracket is in very bad shape. Ive got the inner panels from Flo’s so I can cut out the bits I need but I guess the outside panel will need a patch made from scratch.

These are the brackets at the bottom of the outer rear panels. The right one might be salvageable but I think the left is beyond repair.

Hi, and congrats for the project!
For the fuel tank, what i did on mine was, on the outside removed everything and went to the bare metal. After that primed with epoxy primer and then used some underbody treatment on it.
Internally i've used a product called Tankerite GUM.
Basically you have to first wash the inside with the provided acid, this will remove any possible rust inside.
Then you apply the tankerite following the guide.
This will leave the interior of the fuel tank covered with this hardener material that will prevent future rust and, if present, should also fill small holes.
https://tankerite.com/tankerite-en/ in case you want to check it out.
About the filler neck, is rust the problem or is the plastic gasket at the base?
