Which engine is it? Is the starter under the exhaust manifold? Next time it happens try giving the starter a good whack with a hammer (not joking). It used to happen on my MR2, the starter overheats and somehow the hammer gets it going. You still need a new starter in the end but it should work for the meantime. It sucks having to do this in the rain
