Hi all.

Im heading over to the Nurbergring in July this year and after some options on what the best brake pads are to use and best tyres to go for.

I know the general consensus is go for the best that you can afford but i want to see what people have used.

so far for the 86 I've come across ferodo DS2500 or the Mintex M1144/M1155

as for rubber.... i have no idea. I have used Toyo in the past on my GT4 celica and where great in the dry... shocking in wet.

I will be driving the car from Inverness in Scotland to the ring which is 980 mile driving one way (1570KM) so needs to be good on the road also.

Hey,

My car (Carina coupe) has previously been running 3.5kg spring all round, quite a stiff front bar and no rear swaybar.

Previously using AD08R, just changed to R888 as well as fitted some stiffer front springs (now 5kg)

So here's some thermal imaging results of tyres after getting back into the pits: (apology if its confusing but front tyre pics are taken from the front, rear tyres photo taken from the back)

The car felt a little more understeery with the 5kg springs in front, you can now see that this is loading up the left rear a lot.

I think from here I'll look at fitting the rear sway bar up. Was running 32psi hot all round and neg 2.2 degrees camber up front.

What wheel settings you are using for the track for your ae86?
I have been using ae86 for drifting mainly, so high camber was just fine. However now turning more to a circuit and I do get a feeling that the settings for the front wheel alignment may not be ideal for the track.
Would be great to hear what you think about this.

Hey guys,

I dont have an AE86 but something close. An AA60 Carina with F series live axle rear, beams motor and 6 speed etc. It's pretty close in size / suspension / performance etc to an 86 but a little heavier perhaps (1000kg)

I recently went to a trackday and set a new best time, 2.3 seconds quicker than previous. (Different tires made part of this big difference...)

When I posted a video up though, a few people gave me the hard word for not heel toeing on downshifts and chirping the wheels at times.

Here's the vid:

Here's the thing though - I used to heel toe! And it made my braking zones WAY longer.

Why? Because I only had half of my brain concentrating on the braking, and only half of my foot on the brake pedal. A few trackdays ago I decided to concentrate on braking strongly. No engine braking through gears and then just rev match to the right gear for corner exit mid corner.

Results? Way faster with way shorter braking zones! More consistent braking with fewer errors, and much quicker to resolve any lockups etc.

I found that I was much more ready to react to a wheel locking up, or an understeer or oversteer event. So I could brake a lot later and be confident that I wasnt going to steam straight ahead.

People say
"It upsets the balance of your car"
But so what? If I'm not losing speed and I'm not spinning out, does it matter that the car squirms for 1/10th of a second? Nothing of consequence happens.

"It wears out your clutch"
A clutch is a consumable item, that's why you buy a heavy duty one

Thoughts on this?
Who rev matches and who doesnt, and why.

If I saw this thread a few years ago I'd be hugely insistent on heel toe being mandatory. But my own personal experience since then has differed. Much to my own surprise.

I'm not talking about this in terms of mechanical sympathy, just simply setting a good lap time.

Most probably i rebuild my engine. And i wanted to know what do you think about to put in the engine. Also i will be using 98 octane fuel with vp additive to raise to 102 or 109 octane.

I am thinking of putting

1. Racing bearings mains and conrod
2. Camshafts about 278°
3. Valve springs and retainers ( JUN, TOMEI )
4. Reinforced Bolts - Main Stud & Ladder Set (tomei)
5. Pistons 81.5 mm 11.5 or 12.0 comp.ratio (cp)
6. Trd gasket 0.8mm

i would love to hear your ideas and experianses. Also i will be very pleased to sugest me brands and profiles for those items.

Hello every1,
i would like to know your experiance with AE86 Wings or your opinion for mine.
The engine that is mounted on the car is an 20v BlackTop 1.6 with 120whp dyno resault.
The spoiler that i have is a GT Wing made for skyline. The car is clearly ans only used for grip racing and NOT for drifting!!!
Also please dont mind for the broken exhaust.
Please take in consideration the track shape and size. The track shape that we use, is the red, on the bottom left corner. 2.2km long

2.2km long

Righto,
Everyone knows that less weight in an AE86 is better. It's the welterweight punching above its weight right? But what exactly can you do about it and perhaps more importantly, what can't you do?

When we go online and start looking we find lots of posts that suggest that a couple FRP panels and we're at 850kg's. Some people claim that low 700kgs are possible with a full cage and serious cutting of sheetmetal. Lets try and see if we as a community can try and get an idea of how serious we can take these claims.

Over the years I've weighed some stuff as it went through my hands. Mostly suspension stuff for my models, but some other stuff too. Logic dictates that when we add up most of the important stuff we end up with the weight of the final car.

What I'm going to do is post some tables with parts, weights and where applicable weight saved. Hope you guys will chime in with some measurements you made yourselves. I will update them on a regular basis.

What bucket seats are you using, or have been using ? What does fit and what doesn't fit.

I find it difficult to fit in bucket seats with side neck protection like Recaro Pro Racer, Sparco Ergo/Circuit and so on.

Also, wide seats like Sparco EVO XL will hardly fit between tunnel and door, especially if you have rollcage.

Lower and thinner people will have less problems, but 190+ cm and 100+kg will have hard time fitting inside.

Please share.
Thanks

Lower and thinner people will have less problems, but 190+ cm and 100+kg will have hard time fitting inside.
Please share.

The latest hot version N2 battle has been fought recently and I know nothing about it. Tsuchia is back to participating in a KMS prepared Levin that looks like it means business. The typical non-aero style harks back to the TRD N2 roots, but dori-dori's driving combined with a KMS engine should be something special.

Lots of cars have been redone this year and look better then ever. Did the 1 minute barrier fall this year?

Also check out this years entry by SS Work's: YE GODS!! I NEED MORE INFO ON THIS THING. How much of it is a tube chassis?
