Peter Nunn in the latest UK AUTOCAR issue
mentions in page 19 that Toyota is about to Revive the AE86 Drool Drool Drool

He claims Toyota has made a deal with Subaru to use the new Impreza chassis and engines (2.0, 2.5 and 2.0 turbo all boxers) in order to create an affordable RWD coupe.

Hmmm. Huge pinch of salt alert... UK Autocar has forged itself an enviable reuptation as being complete shsyters, who tend to fabricate news (particularly poorly Photoshopped images) to pad out the small amount of decent content. My 2p would be that there is sense in the rumour of an AE86 revival (ala the thread on club4ag) but whether it uses Subaru engines (and seriously, why would it?) or not is anyone's guess and I wouldn't take an Autocar article as a suggestion of truth.

FWIW, turbo boxer engines in an AE86 MkII = terrible idea.

About the Subaru deal: that's already old news/rumors:
http://www.aeu86.org/viewtopic/ae86/p/76995#76995
However about the bigger engines is a new rumor. Wink

But does publishing a rumor in a printed magazine already make it true? Blonde question

If we pretend to believe the editor:
Its absolutelly logical to use an allready existing egine/chassis combination.
It dramatically reduces costs.

And right now Toyota has absolutelly no great engine, except the D4-D's...

I believe that toyota is aiming higher than just making an affordable rwd - hence the key points in discussion with the ae86 community. They realise they have created a cult (maybe unknowingly) which has a great following, and i think they want to live up to the reputation. They will make a new ae86 only after every single step had been meticulously planned, and with a pinch of good faith, toyota will reinvent the hachiroku, like mazda has done with the miata. Nobody wants to se a car "half-done" or to give a feeling that its not quite as it could be. OR the worst of all, that it doesnt sit in its own place. Many good cars are in the no mans land - because they are either too big/expensive/fast/costly for the "affordable category", but not quite big/expensive/fast/costly for the "premium" one. A car needs to have integrity. Clint Eastwood integrity. Very Happy

I believe tha car will get reinvented in the true spirit of the hachiroku and as an own platform. Much like the miata. _we pray_ Very Happy

It's all old news and gossips,
Toyota bought a large chunk of shares of Subaru so Toyota has a large say in Subaru now, thus for the possible new AE86 upgrade.

This topic was already published in the AE86 Magazine vol 20 which was released last year.

hi nmwisima, maybe it is already official but i just haven't seen the press reports here yet, but then again I am not always looking at those particular magazines that focuses on the new car releases here in Japan.

Will be interesting to see the new outcome on the new joint venture though. Finally Toyota is making an effort to release more sports cars.
Their high end cars released in the LEXUS range are so nice.

It really looks good, but it seems like a photoshopped version of the new Hyundai Coupe to me....
