I'm in the process of buying a bride seat (zeta iii) and seat rail from nengun.com and I'm still wondering which seat rail to choose, because I need it to slide, and it seems to me that AE86 specific bride seat rails do not slide (I mean the ones that fit full bucket seats, because there are sliders for reclinable seats).
Best regards
PS: AWESOME project mate! Keep up the good work!! |
Hi there I am building custom seat brackets that will be welded in and non adjustable as I don't think there will be anyone other than me driving this when finished !!
AE86's are not an easy car to mount seats in and keep them adjustable while keeping head room

Well progress has been very slow again, as work seems to take up most of my time at the moment, I have been working at planing and placing all the components for the fuel delivery system as you see lots of Earls fittings are involved!!
The area looked quite large beside the fuel cell but when you have to fit in a surge tank, two pumps, filters, return lines and then the diff pump as well then things start to get a bit cramped.
I have decided on the place for the dry sump tank , to try and spread the weight evenly and keep it as low as possible.
And while I was wasting money I bought this as well, the perfect licence plate for this car!
I am racing my Rally car tomorrow so there goes another weekend and next weekend I am co driving in the GT3 in a 2 day Tarmac event http://www.targa.co.nz/ so progress will be slow.

How will you fair out safety wise with the dry sump tank in the car, wont you have to firewall it?

Well it has been a long time since I have had time to work on this project but now that my work is slowing down with the rest of the world I will have some spare time again!
The car went back to my panel guy who sorted all the last little bits of body work , as I told hime there was no rush ,he gave it a home for about 4 months.
I am now fitting the body kit to the car and have made the move to a tilton floor mounted pedal box as well. This gives a lot more room under the bonnet for carbs and trumpets.
So all that is left to do before paint is build the seat mounts , lengthen the steering column as the floor mount pedal box moves everything back quite a bit and test fit everything else. Also in the next couple of weeks i will make my new fibre glass bonnet. I have another set of rear TRD springs on the way that have had a bit cut out of them so I will see how the height looks with them in it

Hehe, I see that your N2 project has been in the background for the summer just like mine. Looking pretty good!
I can imagine how crowded the right side of the engine bay is on an RHD car with sidedrafts so the pedalbox is probably going to help a lot. Having just mounted the seat on my car, I noticed that there's absolutely no clearance for my head with a helmet on. Moving the seat behind the lateral frame beam would help but then I'd need a pedalbox and an extended hub for the steering wheel. Is this what you're planning on doing?

Eircamae86, We had to do that to our floor pan to get us away from the roof with a helmet on. Works a treat.

Looking forward to seeing the finished result of much hard work!
Are you going to run the N2 in any racing class in NZ or did you build just to have it
Would be cool to see your car run at Tsukuba in the yearly AE86 Battle!

Hi there
I'm not sure what I will do with it when I have finished it , there are a few classic classes that I can race in here in NZ .I may just buy a new chair and sit in it and look at the finished car in my workshop!!.
I will have some more pictures in a couple of days as the last bit of fabrication is being done now , and then will be ready to start painting

Another small bit of progress today , making my FRP bonnet ,
I had gel coated these the day before so I will finish this tomorrow with a bit of luck when I resin the inner and outer together
The completed item weight is less than half of the stock part.
It all takes so much time when you are manufacturing so many parts for this car, but at the end it will be built how I want it done .
This is just a hobby .

Well a bit more progress, work tends to get in the way of me finding time to make progress !!
I managed to complete my fibre glass bonnet today and roughly fitted it up , I will shape it correctly tomorrow
I will weigh it , but would safely say that it is less than half the steel original.
My seat has found a home and as you see it is set back quite a bit so the steering column will need to be lengthened as well . I needed this set back to fit the floor mount pedal box
The pedal box and floor is done as well
And the dry sump tank now has a bracket to sit in as well as a strap to support it , the bottom of the mounting bracket has a spigot that goes through the floor so that the tank can be drained in place when giving it an oil change.
I hope a bit more progress will happen this weekend

That's looking very good. Amazing work, and when I saw the seat before reading that part I thought it was set that far back cos you were a very tall person (6' 5" +). lol
Keep up the good work.

Without the third pedal the motor may last a bit longer! , if I had a drinking problem I probably wouldn't have one of these cars
