Hey DInges

Did you see this:

http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects-40/661506-tim...o-car-2008-a.html

Might give you some more ideas. Wink
Not that yours is not a very nice build of course.

They won Time Attack GB last year and run one of the most famous Impreza shops in the UK. So they do have much more funds then we do of course. But you might catch one or the other idea from them what you can incorporate into your design.

Did you get the point about the front being too stiff.
They saying that they went a little bit too far with stiffening the front and now it is very twitchy.

Just thought would be of interest for you. Wave

Keep your good work going.
I want to see this car running this summer.
Thumbsup

No I have no idea what they mean with that, maybe the front is to stiff in relation to the rear, so the rear just might be to weak?

Hopefully I can get my car running this year too, I miss driving it. Wink

Thanks for the hint BTW. Thumbsup

I see you are already on scoobynet.

I also hope to get mine finally going. Having a car which is not driveable is the worst thing ever. Although as long as you can work on it you see the progress. But in my case it is just the officials.

Small update,

Did some stuff today after a small summer dip. Very Happy

Radiator and intercooler time!

The standard GC8 radiator is very good, the only problem are the plastic end tanks which are prone to cracking on the seams after a few years.
So i needed to check if I could weld on aluminum ones.
Luckily I had an old radiator somewhere which I could use for experimenting.

If this works I'll buy a new radiator for the real thing.

Old radiator:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

First bits off:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Endtanks gone and behold a nice weld-able core . Smile

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

I'm not convinced by the 300 dollar taiwanese FMIC kits somehow, and I'm not the only one it seems.
After talking to some pro's the next best thing to mega expensive rally/race cores were actually cores used in production cars.
Now it was only a matter of searching for the right one.

It has to have the right measurements of course, with as much fins per inch as possible.
Also it should be thin, thick cores are not as good as a thin one with a big frontal area.
Problem is that the air going through the core is at core temp halfway through the core thus not cooling anymore.

In the end I went to a big car scrapyard searching through tons of cores.
I found one with all that I needed, except the height, so I need a second one to weld to this one.
It's from a Renault trafic from 2007.
It also has plastic end tanks, so they need to come off as well.

This is how it looks like new:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Sawing off the first pieces:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Debris:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Ready for more torture:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Viola:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

The red gasket for the plastic endtanks, check the fins in the core:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

A core ready for some nice endtanks:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

That was it for now!

Well Zen of course has some more funds.
They are one of the bigger Scooby tuner in the UK and the UK is a very good market.

But still a very nice car.
You should also check the Roger Clark Motorsport car. That is pure porn.

The manifold is from Tracktive in the UK, but it is pretty expensive I can tell you. Wink

And no, it was never going to be Group-N too. Puh Wink

More than enough hehehe.

But as Speed-inc. says, the Gobstopper is nicer IMO, but that is also a cost no object project. Wink

I wish in my future life as a mechanical engineer to have unlimited budget to build a car. But for now I can only dream.... Anyway, you're close to this, as you can afford a project car like yours! Good luck!

Well.... affording is a big word!
I'm broke all the time actually, and one of the reasons I fabricate alot of things myself is that I cannot afford to buy them. Wink
I will be happy when it is finished so I can breathe financially again, but meanwhile, I am enjoying myself very also, I like to fabricate all the stuff aswell, so it's not all that bad. Smile

Not likely hahaha. Wink
But maybe in other ways it will pay off indeed, let's hope so. Thumbsup \

Started working on the brake lines

I had to get some stuff before I could start, so I went to the scrapyard and took nipples I needed, from the newest cars they had, coz then they are still shiny. Wink
I also took 2 T-pieces which cost almost 40 euro a pop at the shop.

Nipples:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

T-pieces:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Looks like donkey balls, so I polished them a bit.
As new!!:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Everything together, in the shop almost a 100 euro's, at the scrapyard 10 euro. Very Happy :

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

I found the measurements of the AP-Racing brake fluid reservoirs I am going to buy, so I turned a dummy from plastic:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Friend of mine had a "bead" machine which I borrowed, but before using it the line had to be cut off:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

This is how it works:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

For assisting me with the shape I found a piece of solid core wire.

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Then the real work started:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

This was ok, but I wasn't really satisfied.
So today I redid the whole thing, and now I iz happeee:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Now the rest. Very Happy

Small update,

Did another small piece of brakeline, the part to the left front wheel:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AP-racing fluid reservoirs have arrived, my dummy worked pretty good I must say!:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

An air exit for the bonnet, WRC replica.

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

This is something else that crossed my path, a new cable for the battery.
It's aluminum with a silver coating, used in proffesional racing apparently.
A bit bizarre, it's fingersize but weigh's nearly nothing:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

FMIC time!
This job was sidelined for a bit but today I got some inspiration again.

The endtank attachments had to be worked.
There was a difference in width between the cores, so after contemplating a bit it was decided to change them altogether and make them as small as possible.
So a tool was made and used:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

The IC needed to be heated up so the material would get softer and more workable.

Fire up the ovens:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Unfortunatly it cooled down rather quick, so I used a torch later.

Mutilated a plier:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

First flattening occured Smile:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

After that my new tool came into action:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Viola, the result and difference:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Next week I'll rework the radiator the same way.

Now the 2 cores have to be welded together which is pretty risky, if that fails all this work has been done for nothing!

Received some parts today, alloy tube and connectors:

AE86 : Projects > Impreza GroupN project

Next week more parts should follow, so more updates then. Smile
