Hi,
I still canīt imagine that if I get a gearset for about 1500 I need to pay 4500....
Taxes are of course about 23%, I think, but shipping canīt be about 2000,-... Itīs not too heavy and large...
And I donīt need to pay a bidding fee...

well now i am really confused men !!! 
Doctor can your man in Japan help me out with a Kenwood stereo DPX-700 with cd changer i saw in YAJ ?
If he sends it to me via EMS i am not paying any taxes! i 've tested it out 3more times with items from CHINA or HongKong.

With Mailorder Japan I paid about 2,5 till 3 times the bidding price, depending on the price of the item and nature of the item...
If you bid on cheap items it will get more expensive because of the handling costs: 6 dollars for normal stuff, extra 5 dollars for breakable stuff like the headlights.
Then the shipping was very expensive when it was very heavy: about 80 euros. 
And then I got double exchange rate for the items itself: euro->dollar->yen. 
So, if you buy expensive stuff: go for MOJ because they don't charge you a percentage in some cases.

No it wont be 4500 euro. I dont know how much it weights, but lets say its 20kg. I think it will be not more than 2000 euro including EMS shipping.
Then you have to add you national import tax and VAT if they charge you. For NL it would be 2475 euro including taxes etc.

Hi Raki,
Nope, you should have much lower shipping, but here you are talking about a product that is relatively expensive compared to weight and size. And those last two are important for shipping.
This means a 10 euro part could cost 100 euro's to ship abroad, while a 100 euro part could just as easily cost 10 euro's to ship.
We're generalizing here based on average part prices and average shipping prices. Average parts are usually between 50 and 200 euro's, shipping usually is above 50 euros for anything over some folders (lights, dash parts, springs, that sorta thing).
The price of part = cost of shipping is a rule that makes you make safe choices.
Rimms btw are an exception to the rule. Rimms are relatively heavy and big compared to what you generally pay for it, especially for 2nd hand rimms. Its not unheard of that you pay way more on shipping then on the parts.
The point I was trying to make, was simply that expensive shipping, is only expensive in our eyes. When you stop and think about it, shipping is dead cheap.

yeah indeed, my 2 wheels costed me 5.000 Yen, shipping with EMS was 13.000 Yen. Another set of 2 costed 7.000 Yen and the shipping via boat was 6000 Yen

@Mux: Thatīs what I wanted to say. It just depends on the item itself. So the *3-rule is maybe right for used rimms, but not for most of the other items like gearsets, r+p and suspensions...
I guess importing a 4.77 r+p will be still cheaper than ordering it at the local Toyota dealer...

i see it this way:
At Toyota you pay full price + VAT
when bought yourself in Japan you pay less, but have to add shipping.
If your lucky, and the item passes the border without any importtaxes (which can happen every now and then), then you're lucky, if you do need to pay importtaxes, it only can be as expensive as a Toyota item would be.
Imho you can't really lose anything on trying to import it yourselves, only win!

The nice thing about MOJ was that they put the actual value on the package, so if you bid 1000 yen on an item, it will say 1000 yen as value, not the value including handling and shipping.
So my headlights were charged mildly and some other stuff I ordered was excempted.

the guy i use asks how much you want to put on the package, so that's always lower as the real value off course
it's not insured, so why bother putting the correct value on the package

well to clarify some things,
We have been helping members overseas with buying off yahoo auctions.
Basically there is a limit per country on the weight and size on the shipments for EMS, AIR, SAL and Surface.
some regions alow up to 20kr or 30kg per package
then there is the size limit as well.
No more than 1.5 meters in length and 1.5 m in girth (so a total combined length of 3 meters)
This is the max allowed in certain countries but others like Spain is less.
Yahoo auctions also have added hidden costs.
Some shops charge you an extra 5% once the item was won. then there are the payment fees to the seller and the domestic delivery then our fees and export costs.
If you are unlucky then there is the import duty at your end as well.
But some get away with it and others do not.
There are some tricks involved to get around it.
