greetings from Australia
a little background, i have have owned 3 ae86 (3 doors) in my few years of sprinter loving...all under the premises of them being race/drift cars...the 1st two were a little too rusty for my best interests, so they were striped to the last nut and bolt and almost given away..i bought this particular shell about 18 months ago, and since ive never made a race/rally car before, and don't earn enough to pay someone to prepare it for me, i have done most of the things on my own
i really should have kept a tab on how many cutting discs, linishing belts, wire wheels, sanding discs have been used on this car.. it was originally doing to be a drift car, until i started servicing at rallies for work, and driving a few autocross's and motorkhanas in borrowed cars...i was hooked, the dirt is just too much fun!
as there really arent alot of rallied ae86's in Australia, im hopeing a few people on this board who rally them can see this and tell me your impressions (seems to be a fair few in finland and stuff)
anyway.
When i started.
(spot the rarer car here)
to get the buckets nice and low i had to cut out the floor on both sides and remove that hump that usually sits there then weld in rails.
My DMS struts, which are yet to be mated to a stub axle...that will come.
seam welding
And as it stands nowish. It gets painted in toyota royal blue over xmas
Basically it wont be very radical.
i have everything to bolt back in,
from the top of my head
Zenki disc rear end (kaaz diff, 4.8:1 ratio)
bigport 16v (at first, to get used to the car, have a black top 20v bottom end that im building up with quad throttles etc)
Autronic Smc ecu
rx7 series IV front brakes
trd bushes thoughout, usual things
Bilstien rear shocks
thats all i remember now, obviously all the other rally car normals like seats, harnesses trip metre and stuff
here are some old pics of my old shells (white one was crushed)
lemme know what you think
Andy.

Awesome project!
So why did you choose the AE86 over an Impreza, you don't like the Scoobies?

this is a better car to learn in i think...I initnally thought parts were cheaper for this car, oh how wrong i was ,but its slower, more forgiving, plus i really like the shape of AE86's
and well yeah i am sick of subarus abit! I'll never own one, i like my less common cars more, be them quick or not! (current daily driver a ford 3 door Tx3 laser/escort, i've seen maybe 2 others in this city)

Looks great!
The rollcage looks quite comprehensive so if I should come up with a suggestion I'd say you should have a reinforcement across connected to the floor like this.. or straight/flat.
and you might consider using metal-joints instead of trd bushes, atleast some places like panhard rod and then also make it adjustable.
keep up the good work

rose jointed suspension arms will be on the way, (one day) im just putting it all baack together so i can get to drive it again.
And yes, i was very very tempted to atleast put a bar in the main hoop( for side impact protection)
well i really don't have an answer for that, i know i should put one in..but i ran out of tubing at the last minute, can't get any till next year (out of stock) and well, its taking up too much room to be waiting around any longer...
thankyou for you comment though
and your welds are so much neater than mine!

I know what you mean, Scoobies are to common here also, that is why I try to differenciate with the 2 door wide body set up.
But I also think that working with them contributed to your disliking, I would never want to make a living from my hobby, it's overkill.
I like the speed and handling though, the Hachi won't match up in the end, but it's alot of fun also.
I'm putting uniballs in the Impreza suspension, are they the same as rose joints?

yeah i used to love subaru's, but now...just a car i see as boring!
i dont know what rosejoints are called (rod ends, pillowballs) but they look like this..
its too bad the rules im not allowed to change the mounting points of the suspension...no equal length trailing arms for me!
small update, sudden death of a family member means there wont be updates for a while

Scoobies boring?!?!
Come around when I finished my car, I'll teach you boring.
Those look like the joints which I'm going to use, pillowballs sound familiar.
Can you tell me some more about the trailing arms??
I'm not bound to any rules.

wow! that looks great, one thing though, what are you going to do about your heater? I was stealing your design for the strut links for my rally car... but my heater's blower motor is in the way!! Mind you, im LHD, I dont know if that matters. Did you just move your's over? Or are you running an aftermarket defroster?

I'm seriously impressed at the effort you are putting in to this. You reckon you will be able to take it out on a stage after all that work?
And what's the go with the HDT Torana?

Hi Andy,
Iīm very impressed seeing your work! And itīs nice to see so many rallydrivers on this board. I didnīt spend much time in the body of my rallycar. I bought it with only a rollcage and just do a bit work to keep the rust away...
I hope youīll be successfull with that car!
Best regards,
raki
P.S.: Added you in msnm

That, im afraid is whats proving to give me headaches right now, i dummy fitted the blower fan and there is no simple way it will fit, and i MUST run a demister, basically to get it registered and it actually does get frosty down here in the winter Ive put it aside for now, as its just a huge headache. right now im just concerned on getting it into a rolling shell, my struts are done, brakes are sorted, and most of the suspension parts are sandblasted and painted

Its actually not as pretty as the pictures make out, its a traditional rally car paint job, you might have noticed i havent painted the outside or the panels yet, as i wasnt going to let steel spark fillings rust all over it while i put it together (the outside paintjob i'll do in a booth once it gets rolling)... and it will be tough putting my pride and joy out there for the 1st time, the first time i drove in competition on the dirt, i kinda of bent the car.
and the LJ torana is a genuine Xu1 gtr, and from what i could tell is a spot on brock replica, we were putting a rollcage in that when it was in the background

Thanks. this is realy the only forum where there are other ae86 rally cars ive seen (everyone is abit obsessed with the drift) i have been kind of lazy the past couple of weeks, but will update it with more pictures soon.
ill need to pick your brain for ideas on what you did to your car
Andy.

yeah not a genuine HDT car, its a good replica mind you!
to put an update on this, engine gbox and diff are in, bought all the fuel lines and brake lines (teflon braid, as a result i am broke!) but fuck they look nice...
should be running mid july.
its in the middle of autocross season here so ive decided to get it running, put it together without painting the panels, get some km's on the car, so it will be a mainly blue with panda doors, grey bonnet, gold bootlid...will look very average...but it will go well...
I'll paint it before the first rally in early november.
will take better pics soon
