Where can you buy these at a reasonable price in the U.K ?

Quick lookup in our pricelist says the 4.7 costs 500 euros and the 5.3 (trd) costs 1400 euros.

Before I logged on this morning I called Fensport about this, the chap on the 'phone seemed fairly un-interested saying "the cars getting quite old now, can't get parts anymore" that was it !!
Although they list a TRD CWP Mad

I could'nt find any details in the AE86 shop, can someone let me know what ratio's are available and at what cost, thanks

I heard it is discontinued from TRD Japan?
Maybe from TRD US?

We don't list the CWPs on the shop page because we don't stock them yet, not enough demand for them. We're still pretty a small shop you know Smile

We just happen to have the 4.7 in stock which we advertise in the commercial sales section. I would have to check for the availability of other types when I get back home tonight and can check with my supplier.

No idea really. We have it on our list of items we can order but that doesn't mean they still have it as the list is a little older. We generally get our thing through TRD HK if I am not mistaken.

So far I've heard good things about the 4.7 ratio. I want to get one for my own car one of these days myself but need to save up for another LSD awell first.

Depends a bit on what you want to do with you car aswell offcourse.

The installation is one of the things thats holding me back aswell. Its hard to find a good place with a mechanic that does a proper job on these things.

Hi,
if you use a close ratio gearbox, you should take the 5.3, otherwise the 1. gear might be too long. That´s of course the perfect solution! With the 5.3 and the original gearbox the 1. gear might be a bit short.
I use a 4.7 with original gearbox and it´s a cheap medium, but okay...

Yes I tried the CR box with a standard final drive, not too bad but the whole driving experience was kind of 'flat', I think it was too tall gearing in every gear except 5th
You could smell the clutch burning just by driving onto a trailer ! 5.3 is possibly the answer, oh, and the TRD clutch I have waiting to fit !

I thought I'd share my experience with the different cw&p and gear box ratios in my Tarmac rally car

When I first built my car that I destroyed I ran a standard ratio gear box with a 4.55 cw&p (the standard cw & p is 4.3)and this was a good start as it helped the car get of the line well and also closed up some of the gaps in the standard gear box ratios and 5th gear was a little more useable.
I then fitted a TRD close ratio box (the one with 2.3 first and lower 5th)and found that 1st gear was too tall, so I then purchased a 4.77 cw & p and this is the setup that I run now.
I feel that adding the c/r gearbox has been the best modification that I have ever made to my car, ideally I think that a 5.1 would be the best but TRD no longer make them.This car makes most of it's power from 3500 -7500 rpm so has alot of torque and has a wheel size of 205/50/15 and has a redline at 8500, max speed is about 210-215kph.There are a few other ae86's here that use a 5.3 cw&p and any rally or club events my car has been faster overall by alot.
Remember that this is on low profile Tarmac tyres , Gravel tyres are normally taller in their profile and this will have an effect on your gearing as well. Starts from the line take a while to get right, you just have to take off like a normal road start and then make the most of the long first gear, and from then on it just gets better and better.When I have raced this car at the curcuit in a grid start the other cars beat me off the line but while they are changing into 2nd gear ,my car passes them while still winding out in 1st and from then on it's all on !

I have just bought a 5.3 and same TRD gear kit as my rally car but this engine will have very little torque with a very narrow power band and a rev limit of 10500rpm ,so is going to need a shorter first gear to get moving and have the revs to still gain the top speed, this set up should suit most circuits here.
The gear kit here in NZ cost me about $2700NZD and the 5.3 $1500 NZD and a new 4.7 is about $750 NZD and are still available, I also just purchased 2 TRD lsd units as I was told that there will be no more made of the smaller axle size from TRD anymore, not sure how true this is but there were only 4 in the country here, but now I have some spares.

Fine looking AE there nzae86, I would love to hear it running.

I'm using a Quaife Ford type 9 gearbox and 1st gear is currently good for about 40mph, similar I guess to the TRD one you have. My engine however is a fairly standard bluetop.
It should be possible to get a 4.77 ratio here in the U.K, anyone know what else is available ?

@nzae86: Lucky guy! The gear kit in germany would cost about 3 times more than you paid... Maybe it would be a good idea to import it...

@totta Crolla: Your Toyota dealer should be able to order the 4.77... But why not order it from another country? I bought my r+p in the USA and it was including shipping and taxes, etc.. 150% cheaper as in Germany...

I used both 4,7(Stageoneimports) and 5,3(Trd) ratio in rallies .From my experience , with a stock gearbox and 15" rims , the 5,3 is much more interesting , give you much response , and not too long ratio on 5th gear. BUT , it's quite expensive(paid 1450€ here in Belgium) , and have a very poor reliability (for cometition use)
Mine broke after 10 races. Easy to understand , as the same amount of power is distributed on less teeth.
I than bought the4,7 (300€ including delivery , with some parts , like washer , nuts , dust cover, bellville washer etc )
It's on for the third year now, without any noise ...LOnger ratio, but great reliability.

cost me around $440 Aussie dollers... pretty cheap i thought..

im yet to test my 4.7 but im hoping it will make an imporvement on my standard t50 gearbox car... i think 5.3 would be alittle to much.. 5.1 sounds perfect but no longer can get it Sad

and TRD 5.3 is already discontinued from Japan

Thanks NZAE86, a very interesting information. Never saw that on an ae86, but worth to be fixed on .
Was it made from TRD ? Not really to hard to realise , but I'm still convinced that the less teeth you have the less reliable it will be .
And When I broke my 5,3 , I was running with stock engine and gearbox , and with 15" rims

That diff cooling setup is a copy from the trd-bible for ae86. So yes, this was trd's solution to keeping the diff alive..looks like a good one too. I'd go one step further and weld a bulge in the diff housing as well for some extra oil capacity.

This setup is from the TRD manual that covers Group A and N2 builds and was produced back in August 1985 by TRD , I also have the Levin and Trueno bible and it is more of a list of parts that were available
AE86 : Buy / Wanted > Final drive

I have this manual in paper form and it would take a bit of time to scan it , I think I may finish building my car first !
