Hi all,
Not a Hachi build up here, I do have one but thats my daily driver.
But my project revolves around a Subaru Impreza.

I've had 4 Scoobies and I'm building up my fifth from now.
I have to explain something about nr:4 to help you understand nr:5 though.
Nr:4 is a 1995 non-turbo shell completly built up with 2004 STI materials.
Subframes, hubs, wishbones, tank, complete loom, dashboard, engine, gearbox, axels, diffs, everything.
All this car needed was a cage for extra strength and a paintjob.

I have a complete write up on it at this link: http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=g...opic;f=2;t=000119

Now I have bought a new goodie, very rare, and much better than just a cage and a paintjob!
I am going to build everything from the last project into this one.
A genuine Prodrive Group-N rally chassis, LHD, seam welded and full cage by Prodrive themselves.
When I picked it up:

Did the first small step on the chassis today.
I'll begin with the dash, and the first thing to begin with is the heater unit.
First problem, there is a beam from the cage that runs through the dash.
That wouldn't be a prob as it runs there on a standard car also, but only then it's removeable.
Now there is no way to mount the unit behind the beam in one piece.
The beam:
I've got a heater unit to use as a dummy, the one that I'm going to use is still in the other car.
I had to separate this unit because it would not fit in one piece behind the beam.
2 mounting points were also removed, which is no problem as these would not be useable anyway.
The 2 unit parts:
One part fitted:
Et viola, a heater unit in place:
I'm not sure if I will leave it like this, I'll contact my friend in the rally team if cutting out the beam brings down the strength, if it's not significant I will cut it out and use the original.
greets

Great project! Will make a very nice car.
Do you have something like license papers with the shell so you can get it road legal? Or is that not the plan anyway?

I have papers with the chassis, original dutch papers for a 3 door car.

The color will stay under discussion untill the day before painting probably.
The current favotite is grey, semi-gloss.
Inside Jagermeister orange and grey upholstery like this car:
And the end result should be something like this :

I'm not a scooby fan, but I must say that I wouldn't mind driving one like this:
Although I have to admit I would immediately remove that big wing on the back... Too much attention.
On the other hand your nr. 4 is also an excellent wolf in sheeps clothing.

NR: 4 will stay a favorite of mine, so many people were amazed by this car.
Let alone fooled, every one miscalculated how fast this thing is.

haha, great thread there!
that Nr4 is really a sleeper....cause noone would even think it something more than a standard 1.8 litre G'something' impreza without the scoops on the bonnet and the wing on the rear;)
but banpei, the wing on the rear on that b22 is for purpose;)
great work man! wish you all the best with that one!
cheers, adam

nice score on the prodrive shell!
i work on wrx's almost every day of the year, and quite a few rally cars over here.
what version is the car, looks like a IV, early type cage without a carlos bar...either way...i would love to have a genuine prodrive built shell!
keep us updated

Hi Andy!
Thanks I'm very happy with the shell, it's a 1997 shell as far as I can see.
I have no history on it, although I would love to know where the car has been before.
I am no mechanic or anything, what is a Carlos bar?

the best way i can describe it is a bar going from the base of the front A pillar tube straight up to the join onto the same front tube - where the front roof bar is...it is name after Carlos Sainz's massive roll over in 1993 i think here in Australia, the car suffered a huge weak point at the front roof area, and after than they phased it in...i think its madatory for all cages built now to have them
and 97 is version IV
what colour are you painting it..? I too have driven a LHD group A version 4 here in perth..it scared the crap out of me...

Ok, I did notice that bar was missing, I will ask my friend at MSP if we can weld it in before we start, your not the first one who has brought it up so it must be an important bar to have.
Although I was not planning on rolling it.
The current color scheme you can see a few posts above these, the Lambo grey and then non-metallic and semi-gloss.
Orange interior with grey upholstery.
Oh, and I haven't decided on the wing yet, I'm not to fond of them actually.
So you build rallycars in Australia then?
Maybe we can chat a bit on MSN, it's always nice to talk to someone with experience.

i havent built many on my own, me and my boss have built a few Gc wrx's (me doing the labouring jobs -like bolt it all together!- while he does the special fabrication and the engine building/tuning)
i do however know imprezas and subarus (88 liberty's/legacy's to present) like the back of my hand, working 6 days a week for 4 years on the things you learn abit about them, and a quality bit of kit when you see it
the car i ws servicing on this yr was leading into the final round, only to hit a big rock on SS1, tearing out a strut bolt

Hi!
Maybe You can answer my question. I would like to put in NA Impreza car the transmission (diffs and LSD) of sti (gc). Which parts I have to change? How hard it will be?

Well, my red car was a NA Impreza when it was born so I know a little bit about this also.
But first, do you want to swap the internals or the complete diffs and gearbox?
In case of the complete parts:
If you want to put in a 5 speed you should only have to change the gearboxsubframe.
If you want to put in the 6 speed (but the GC never had those) then you will have to cut out two bulges on the inside of the tunnel just beneath the firewall, the 6 speed won't fit in between them.
The rear end depends on if you have a fwd or a 4wd version of the NA car.
If you have a 4wd version you can bolt it on with no problems I think.
I changed my rear subframe at the time but i think the NA subframe will do also.
You will probably have to change all 4 driveshafts, the turbo rear diffs have different inserts then a non turbo version.
The fwd version will give more problems, the tank, subframes, hubs etc. will need to be changed.
I hope this is of any help.

as said above, it depends if its 4wd or fwd.
if you are planning to put an sti transmission into an NA impreza (you didnt mention if you are changing the engine with it)
The diferences would be;
Cable clutch
Fuel tank (if 2wd)
Rear subframe, upwrights and struts (if 2wd)
The NA 4wd's had a tiny rear diff, but the R160/180 still fits in the rear cradle
tailshaft to suit the diff you are putting in (i assume R160, but GC RA's came with R180's sooo?)
the drive shafts will need to be changed to suit the front and rear diff (the front hubs will take most drive shafts of the gc era -they didn't change-, but the rears will be very diferent, and require the hubs to suit the driveshafts that suit the diff you are putting in)
with a subaru everything bolts in, its just a matter of having the right bits to do it
and dinges, ive put many 6 speeds in gc8's, and they fit in the tunnel with no mods at all, got a pic of the bulges you speak of?
