If you're met me you probably know that I also run the MySpace's Hottest hachi's page, well I was on there the other night when someone had posted that Megan Racing had just released an new coilover setup for the 86, honestly i diddent give it too much thought but I looked at it anyway. It actually caught my attention so I gave Megan Racing a call today to find out more, here is what i found out
Pros:
First off the pricing is great!! an average of $900 shipped to your door!
The spring rate is selectable it comes with 8k and 6k setup in the future you will be able to buy different spring rates as an accessory however currently the Eibach coilover springs will fit as well if you need a different spring rate. (or any spring with a 2.5"in ID)
The kit comes with camber plates.
The struts are rated up to a 10k spring.
They come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty against defects.
Everything in the kit is also sold separately so if you ever needed to replace a part you would be able to without a problem.
Now for the cons:
The install is less than bolt on you have to cut 40mm off your factory strut casing and weld a "collar" to fit the new setup onto it so yes you still have to use the factory spindle.
Other than that I havent been able to find any more "cons" to this setup other than not having to able to see it in person or knowing of anyone that has used their products before in the past.
The price is great, the warranty isnt bad either, and the setup actually looks good from what I've seen in pictures, I just hope that it turns out to be as good as it seems.
any questions? send them my way and I'll do the best I can to gather more info for you!
Thanks!

The damper are adjustables ?
My D2 were cheaper (now they are not), fully adjustable, full bolt on and came with an adjustable panhard rod...
But I love the adjustable rear springs like the Greddy's ones.

the dampers are adjustable according to MR you have 32 levels of dampening force.

i have asked a distributor of megan in austria about the ae86 coilovers. he told me that he has the megan stuff but has a better quality product which is the same as megan's but better quality and with softer springs(for me, it doesnt matter if it has softer springs for i want 8/6kgs). i guess he wants me to buy the second one for some reason.?...
he sent me a picture of a D2 coilover which is not for the 86. looks nice tho...
anyway the price for megan coilover set is 900 + shipping cost
price for the ? i guess D2? coilover is 900 and that includes also the shipping cost.
i dont know anything about D2 products. whats your opinion guys? does anyone had experiences with that?

so there is another thing i dont understand.
on megan racing site its written that the cost is $1040, toyd1drifter said its available from $900
so why does it cost 900 from the austrian dealer? its too much difference in real cost and too similar to the original numbers
but that really does matter if its in $-s or -s. in my case, i would not be able to spend all that 900 in euros. but in dollars... i would have a nice coilover set in a week :]
now im waiting for reply. hopefully its his mistake

I dont know in your country. But here in Holland above $900 we need to pay taxes. And I am sure you will come close to those price (900). But one more thing, since the euro is quite expensive... maybe a good idea to get them from US? Anyone who have more idea about this?

In Austria you have to pay taxes above 25 !!
price for Megan coilover 1040$ (~730) + shipping + customs (dont know exactly... about 3-6%) + 20% import tax + margin = ~900
it might be better buying directly in the US and tell the seller he should fake the invoice to a believable price, about 400$, to pay lower customs....
it worked fine for me

D2, Megan etc etc.. I think they all come from the same factory, all use the same shocks (and by all, I mean all cars..so AE86=civic=200sx=mx5, etc) and the same springs. The sets are just modified a bit to fit different cars and then painted the color of whatever company will sell them later on.
Only way to do that properly is to effectively remove the "suspension" function and make em really stiff. Probably does wonders for lowering, does great for drifting and feels very communicative. Might not be the best for ultimate grip and speed..probably not comfy either, but not many people seem to care about that anyways.
If you can: try and buy from a European dealer. If any of the shocks fail and you have to use the guarantee, then its the shops problem..not yours. Easier to do if you are local to the seller.

Kinda bullshit. The greddy set was tested for grip driving no drifting!

Where do you see me mention the greddy set? Those seem to have some actual development behind them, thats why they don't cost 900$
Thats the problem with shocks -> they are knowledge intensive, not technology intensive products. Take a high end moton/ึhlins etc shock apart and you'll see the same bunch of easily produced parts that you'll see in a cheap "insert your own brandname" product. Quality and tolerances are a bit better but not 1000$ worth. The problem is that it is VERY difficult to get the settings right for any combination of car/unsprung weight/sprung weight and wheelrate. ึhlins uses their own full car shaker rig to tune and test..same as they use for LeMans cars etc. Billstein uses advanced on-car telemetry systems and has a scary quality controll cycle. Koni has a product line going back a long way and lots of experience with testing and tuning. That is where the "rest" of the money goes to. The end result, if done well, is a car with 8/6 springrates that is more comfortable then the same car with stock 2/1.5 rates. Or a car with stock rates that handles a lot better. All depends on the way it is tuned. People who slapped stiff springs onto koni's and cranked them up to compensate should know what I mean. Its fine, but leaves a bit on the table compared to properly setup systems.

Still - according to this reasoning the D2 etc are still a good buy, if you can tolerate a bumpy ride. Just to prevent any misconceptions.

i have asked a distributor in florida about the coilovers ( i was referring to this forum ) and asked if its available for $900 and i was really surprised. the reply was YES!! so i will ask my friend in florida to pick up the set and send it to me with some other items. he said the shipping cost will be around $180 so 900+180=$1080, shipped to my house!!
great deal.
