This is a long story, take your time Smile

Whell... thought about opening this topic a bit, and I decided to do it. Although it is not a racing nachine, I am planing to do some serious work around it and make a proper road-fun-ass kicking car of it. Also I am documenting everything that I do around it so...

Let's start:

I found my Hachi in the midle of town, which is mission impossible because Zax, Hrc, Dodo, Kas and the rest of the crew already bought every single one of them Smile

Anyways, I bought my car from a man that was in a hurry, he was going to Germany by bus. We did the premeral paymant and wrote a confirmation on a peice of paper. He was of by bus and I was off with my new car... Right then I was a proud owner of a neet and tidy Celica mk4 (ok, a bit rusty but not bad at all)
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

and now I had to get rid of it because I needed the money to get this:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86
in driving and MOT legal state...

That was realy fast. Celica was sold in just a couple of days for 1 500€. People said that I could get more, but I didn't want to drag the sale for a year...

Looks not that bad. Has it got any major rust spots?

ZaX might have missed this one because he's been too busy drifting his 200sx around europe Wink

front right brake was blocking... so I started there...
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

No wonder... they didn't put ceramic or copper grease on the skiders of the caliper... but standard lithyum that melts it self on like 100degrees celsius... It was almost impossible to get it off
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

I manage to do that, again with a little help of my friends- Rio Cyber did this... respect!!
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

Bought new rubbers in Toyota and repaired all brakes on the car, including the main brake cilinder and clutch cilinders... Peice of cake, only the main brake cilynder was done with ae92 rubbers that were not Toyota original so it got stuck, had to buy new one (used) from Hrc- thanks HRC!!

Here's how it's done:
get the piston out- I used the compressor (be careful, put good amount of cloth or somethig and hands away from the piston- it pops out like a rifle)
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

detail cleaning of every brake caliper
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

if something gets stuck use these tools from left to right Smile
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

this is one bad mother... 3m penetrant- wonder oil!
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

dry the caliper housing thingy
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

clean and polish the piston
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

clean and polish the sliders
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

put new rubbers on and use glycol-sylicon based grease that Toyota provides in the kit
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

the sliders and inside the rubbers put enough copper or ceramic grease (not too much)
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

on front calipers one slider is fixed (bolted in)... Check that bolt, if it is not tight take it out, put some Locktite on it and screw it back
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

rear calipers are complete story for them selfs: DO NOT REMOVE THE THREAD THAT HOLDS THE PISTON IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE SSTool
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

you have to rotate the piston counter clockwise, take it out...
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

than you have to remove the ring that secures the spring...
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86
you can do it easely if you have the pliers for removing the rings (they are widening when you pres them), or with a screwdriver (carefully)
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

than just remove the threaded thingy out with pliers (careful, dont grip it too much because you will damage the thread)
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

if your piston looks like this:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

Polish it... it is verry easy if you (by chance) have a milling machine
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

When you did all this, replace all rubbers with new ones, grease them whell and star reasimbling the calipers...

this is not the way to do it:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

you need to push the spring and tin part down and put the security ring back in... Not easy because there is poor space and you have to get it just right...

first off you need a SST...
I found mine in old rear brake caliper piston of AE92. The thread is M8 but with 5 step threads... not standard and easy to find. So you brake the old piston that you don't need any more (buy used, in a poor state), and take out this part:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

then it goes like so:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

and screwed to the end...
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

put all in and put the ring back...

woula!!! Done...

I repeat- use this kind of grease for the sliders:
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

and you can use the glycol silicon based red one for the piston and rubber rings in the caliper...

You just screw the piston in to the ende and you're left with putting everything on the car Smile
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

I used Textar pads and new Delphi oil...
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

Main brake caliper did't go so well so I better not talk about it Smile
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

cluch calipers are so easy that it's not even worth talking about it Smile
Ah, yes, take down the brake booster, youre life will be a lot easyer when taking down the main clutch cilinder
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

slave cilyder
AE86 : Projects > Chiro another Croatian AE86

brakes done!!!

what's left of the story for now (till now) is the papers of the car, ownership and MOT, but that's a diferent storry all together... Later... have to pick up some patience for it... loooong story Smile

Hope this above will help somebody in their reparature of the brakes...

Cheers

Whow, that body really looks in good shape even with the water damage on the carpets. I'd expected the whole thing to be rusted underneath!

Good work on the calipers! nice writeup! amazing you got those pistons in shape again though...

here...

Today temperature got realy low... about 0 degrees... Smile So we are waiting for snow...

I went and bought 4 Barum Polaris tyres... we had a form of group buy (Hrc organised it Smile )... Got the tires, put them on steel rims, got them in the trunk and on my first right curve punkcured the right back tire... Got sideways and noticed an old lady crossing the street, leveled the car front and hit a big hole on the road...

It was a good chance to change to new winter tyres... Smile

Also Chiro has a mind of it's own...
Yesterday the starter was working like a clock. Yeasterday evening, after traning some in the rain (and getting 10L of water in the passanger side) turned off the engine, got to the store, came out, tryed to start it again and it was dead... Pushed the car to start, got home.
In the morning it started like a clock, no problems with the starter... It fixed it self...

Today after getting new tyres, it started fucking with me all over again... Again, It won't start... no clicking from the starter... obviously it has some contact problems... but I can't emagine what it is... I cleand it and remounted it some week ago... It was working fine...

What could it be... Sad
