I was quite interested in what this movie would bring and i was prepared for the worst. It wasn't very good indeed, i didn't have the subtitles and i didn't want to put the tv very loud so i couldn't follow the story very well because of the soft sound.

Well i don't think i missed much of the story and was more interested in what kind of cars they would use.It started with a race of viper against some sort of v8 powered car, this race was pasted together with pieces of video each 0.5 seconds long and it looked like crap, the cars aren't going fast at all if you look close.

Well i won't spoil you on the story but later on when he is in Japan he is drifting with an evo VIII or something. In the japan part they have some real cars unlike the other f&f movies (FD,350Z,evo,gt-r).I didn't see an ae86 though, that's too bad.

The best thing about this movie is a cameo of the REAL drift king keiichi tsuchiya, he has a role as an old fisherman who comments on the drifting skills of the roleplayer, supercool Worship

i don't know when it will be in cinemas here but i recommend you souce this movie somewhere and watch it on a lousy day

I did! Smile There's a white 3-door Trueno parked at the garage at one point.

Indeed! His first line was mis-translated, though. I think he says "Counter-steer ga osoin da yo na" ("He counter-steers too late/too slowly") but the subtitles said "You call that drifting?". Wink

Anyway, the plot of the movie was really lame and it was stuffed full of silly clichés - which was quite what I was expecting anyway. Fortunately there was a lot of nice stunt-driving to look at, courtesy of Sam Hubinette and Rhys Millen, among others. Smile

yeah i spotted that 86 too but it was too bad there wasn't one participating in the movie, this one is just parked.

I think they translated the first line of keiichi like that because alot of people don't know what countersteer is.

Went to see the movie yesterday - MY GOD! That was some hillarious entertainment. Everybody dissing the film for its un-realistic action sets should get a life! I bet nobody expected it to be a drift documentary. Very Happy If you have the chance to go see it in the theatre, you shold do that as the experience is much greater. It is just great fun, mostly because of the japanese scene, which was a bit exagarated at some points.. perhaps its just me, coz im in love with japanese culture and everything with nippon origins, but this is definatelly better than fnf2. The strongpoints of theese film have to be the pure action, car fun, japanese sceen and Keiichi fishing.. I have to say i expected it to be more drift/race orientated, but drifting happens to be more of a side story to the Jakuzza main theeme. Non or the less this is some great entertainment with a few spices here and there ( Spoiler: Vin Diesel at the end "Ive got nothing but time.", Keiichi catching fish and puting an sr20det into a 67 mustang Very Happy ) As many of you i am dissapointed by the non-apperance of hachi, but still fabolous entertainment for car enthusiasts. Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup

Watched it last night and I'm sorry to say, I kinda enjoyed myself. It aint the story of the century but it was definately a good laugh. I was confused at the start finding out that the acters were supposed to represent 17 year old kids *duh* and how fast the guy was send to Tokyo but it did become enjoyable from there. A bit on the very predictable side, and I must have thought "damn that guy has no brains" a dozen times, but still, it was fun to watch.

My list look like this:
1. will be ever - Initial D anime and manga
2. is the Initial D Live Action movie - HK made
3. is maybe tokyo drift

One guy wrote in czech a really nice description of this movie and i agree with him. They just robbed initial D. The movie was just a big effect they made a joke of keiichi as a fisherman and just put 2 sec scene with ae86 Mad i understand that as they maybe think hachi is a really old car and got no power Shocked
The funniest phrase in the movie was: A long days ago the drifting was a totally different like in present time. Its in the scene in that is the main character going downhill with his new girlfriend with a couple of cars.
I laughted as i never did Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Banpei tnx, didnt realise that srry.

Hai Mux, Sugoi entertainmento ne? It had many flaws (i also hated that the main character was a redneck and rather on the slow side.. but anyway.. man, if this movie was put in any other place than japan, i'd hate this movie im sure.

Apolan,

Sugoi?

Well I beg to differ, yes if you are looking for an inteligent realistic drifting scene based movie, Tokyo Drift completely misses the point. You are better off watching one of the BMI video'sVery Happy.

If you are just out to have a good time and a lauch, I found the movie pretty cool in the same way I don't take an Arnold Schwarzenegger seriously but enjoy most of them (I hate his latest works though).

Seriously though, name any action movie made in hollywood in the last century where the main actors actually knew what they were doing (*edit*, gone in 60 seconds does spring to mind, Nicolas Cage really knows how to drive, allthough the whole steel x cars in 1 night thing is total nonsence and that movie is full of cliches aswell).
Real drifting is way to booring stuff to make a good movie out off. Heck, talk to a real yakuza boss and he'll probably tell you he hates the ignorance of both hollywood and the asian movie companies:D

Anyways, you can twist about taste, some people will hate this movie, some will love it, for all the different reasons out there. I for one thought it was fun to watch aslong as you don't take the movie seriously, but I can surely understand how someone else feels its complete crap:D

You mention Nick Cage as the only actor that springs to mind when it comes to driving know-how? That's like spitting on Steve mcQueens grave man! Now there was a guy that loved to drive.

Yep! Smile And i agree with you mux, if one went to see the movie with expectations of some realistic drifting and racing, one missed the time and space of his beeing.. i knew this movie's gonna be a laugh and a laugh it was.. i had so much fun. Very Happy But the japanese theme really made the movie 10 times more fun for me.. ("Ready, seto, gooo!" Very Happy)

Ivan,

Well I was looking at more recent movies, if you look at the 70s and earlier movies, yes there are some great driving movies out there where the actors knew what they were doing and mr mcQueens aint the only example.

But I wasn't really talking about the driving skills per cee, but it springs to mind that if you look at the recents box office (action) movies and TV series for that matter, alot of them really have nothing to do with their real life counter parts.

For us car enthousiasts its easy to spot the nonsence in driving movies like fast and the furious (vin diesels brilliant remark about dubble clutching on an upshift for instance), but the same goes for others aswell, take the run of the mill gangster action movie and then ask a real gangster what he thinks of it and his comment would probably be like "that aint nothing like the real thing, the guy is stupid ashell, you do that in real live, you'd be dead or in jail in seconds".

The question is, does that make the movie less enjoyable? Would a movie about the dialy life of a real gangster be as interesting as the movies we watch about gangsters?

The same, is the live of a police detective as interesting as Colombo's?

Is being a forensic detective such a brilliant job as CSI makes you think, and do those guys really make sence? (just watch the real live counterpart on discovery and be boooooored to death). I'm sure a real forensic detective can't believe the faults that are in CSI.

Would a car movie about real street racing/drifting be as fun to watch as a movie like the Fast and the Furious I, II, III, whatever?

Well thats an interesting thing indeed. It being in japan sure was fun for us japan lovers but I do wonder about alot of things. Like I mention ask a real Jakuza about his life in comparison with Tokyo Drift and he'd probably slap you in the face.

But on the same note, how much is real from the school things, the way foreigners are treating, etc.? I'm sure some of the people on the forum that have actually been to japan can clue us in which bits were just stereo type or cliche, and which bits were real and which things are actually worse in Tokyo then in the movie.

Think of things like drifting past the speed cops, there is a matter of truth there but this was rubbing it in:) but also some of the club stuff and those little cuby sleeping things in han's (or whatever his name is) garage living whatever thing.

Just yesterday I was watching a dvd that the Doctor brought where guys were drifting like madmen on an open city road in broad daylight....so there is some truth to the stories I'm sure.

NoHachi has a few stories to tell about japanese behaviour towards foreigners I think..

Just a fun little fact for you guys loving that it was in japan: Most of the scene's where shot in the USA, they even transformed LA streets to look like tokyo using japanese signs etc... so a big part of the japan scenes you liked were shot in the US of A Puh
