Under shim bucket kit qustion

Hi guys

I'm building my AE86 for grip race and will try to get almost the same engine spec as the N2 car.
I allready got some really nice parts, like TRD Atlantic con rods, a highly modified smallport head (yes I know N2 uses bigport head, but this one was cheap), TODA 4-2-1 header, ITB's and so on.

But I wonder about the valve train and springs, as I will run with a highlift cam, 10-11mm and mayby up to 9500rpm.

TODA have a full under bucket shim kit including springs, but it is very very expensive, and I cant find some adjustment shims for it. That is ofcouse really nesesary.

They also have some normally upratet springs, but are these the same springs as in the under bucket shim kit?

If they are the same springs, mayby I could use them together with the 2NZ buckets, as I can get them on my work.

Have anybody tryed this setup with results?????????? Smile

I'm using 9.5mm lift cams with HKS springs with followers (buckets) from here:

They also do top hat shims to suit and they are available in 16 off or 100 off. I thought they were real expensive but then I realised I was looking at buying 100 of 'em !
Works fine with the cams / springs and a good price too.

You can use the 1szfe of yaris for underbucket shims(maybe the are of 2szfe, i dont know)
I have use them with the toda 's valve springs for 10,5 lift camshafts w/o problem.
I think the valve springs of toda nad the valve spring of the kit are the same. But you can send an email to toda for your question.
Good luck for your project but i wd like more info about your ecu ect

don't know about running more than 9,5 10mm of lift without really good valve seats and springs .....
but back to the underbucket shims
just get the yaris ones .
i know 2 cars running them without a prob.
one is running 9,5mm the other 10,5mm

How do you get to know which height of Yaris shims do you need ?

there is a table on the website that can give you a guidance.
the numbers in front of the part number are the thickness of the shims.

U can set your clearances right using the standard shims and then using a micrometer measure the shim and the bucket together.
Then order the one that has the same dimension from the table on the website.

or you can buy 8 of the smaller ones and measure your clearances then order the correct ones ....

Yes, I mean the Yaris 1,0 bucket, can't remember the engine code.

These cars with 10,5mm lift, how high are they reving?

They guy I bought my modifyed head from, has used it for rally and he just uses stock followers and shims. The cams were 288 degrees duration with about 8,0mm lift.

under 8.5mm lift stock followers and shims are ok ....
Bruno's car is doing arround 9.5k (10.5mm lift)
apardal one is 8.7k (9.4 mm lift)
mine is 8.7k too but i still have the STD shims and buckets ... my cams only go to 8.5mm lift

you can go to about 9.5mm lift on standard shims (Billzilla's engine did that on standard shims) min is running normal limiter with 9.0mm lift and 8.5mm lift and it goes fine. Don't make a high rev engine doesn't give shit. Better take no more duration than 288 and with like 11mm lift.

Creates loads more power.

I can see the TRD N2 uses 304' with 10,0mm lift on the intake and 272' 288' 300' and 304' with 10mm lift on the exhaust.

I think I will go for a set of 304' 10mm lift on both intake and exhaust. I know one who use the same setup on his smallport and it produce about 200hp @ crank at only 9000rpm.
I don't wanna build a really high revving engine, as the revs will kill it in a few time. Otherwise, I could buy the old Atlantic engine I was offered, but I dont wanna rebuild it every 2500km and it for sure not good for the street. The price is also a bit too much Wink

Are HKS good for 10mm lift ?

What about stories that some Supra/Celica valves can be used ?

Does anyone know what diameter/lenght/rate TODA/TRD/HKS valve springs are and help search for alternative solution ?

catcams.be (use IE doesn't work properly with Firefox or others) do springs as well ~8 Euro per spring (E99862 good for up to 11.5mm lift)
