But what did he do???? I assume this head didn't pressure test back in 2003....

So what's the big deal.....???

When you invest $2000.00 on a head and cams, you want everything to be perfect, and I want it to be perfect too, as my reputation is worth a fair bit more............

So with the knowledge of this head going forward, I instruct the shop to be extra careful during the pressure check.

Does anyone see what I see???

Head might have been skimmed quite a bit judging by the mark on the water outlet.
Missing discoloration on the intake port where the TVIS valves are, as well as the discoloration is different on the far left.

I tend to call it the TVIS effect..... While the TVIS butterflies likely have some effect, I believe it also has to do with the offset injector port............

Note valves 1, 4, 5, and 8 are more heavily coated in carbon, they are NOT sprayed nearly as the other valves by the injector placement.

It is similar effect that direct injected engines suffer - large build up of carbon.

Port work begins.... 1 and 2/3 down........

Along with the head work (including cams...) this client sent me his oil pump to massage as well.

Do you get the heads vapor blasted these days? That thing is impeccable.
How useful do you reckon the oil pump 'massaging' is?

I'm trying to persuade my shop to upgrade... the finish I'm getting is only after the head gets tumbled in zinc shot.

As far as massaging the oil pump... the outlet from the pump gears (2) is the most crucial.... Additionally, I've had an idea I've yet to implement, in adding a 45 degree wedge at the galley outlet (1) where it mounts to the block

Next step valve job, then getting chamber volumes to determine depth of final surface machining.

more to come....... Hurray!

Back from its valve job... chamber volumes are measured, and equalized.....

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - OST-078: Not the only one ... work.....]

then back to the machine shop for surfacing, and back to my shop for final assembly, and setting cam clearances. Clearances set @ .008".

I stumbled across this about 5-6 years back. I had a piece of plastic electrical use conduit and I noticed the circumference was nearly the same as the cam journals.... add a bit of tape in the right area and it allows me to set cam clearances, and safely ship the head, without the cams installed - safer with valves on their seats instead of open.
