water pump pulley
hey folks, just went away for thee weeks and returned home to find my 86 had frozen up. i only just bought it and the guy who sold it me hadnt put any antifreeze in it! long story short i didnt realise untill after it had started because the water pump wasnt turning and it burnt the fan belt out (b*stard)

after thawing it out and serverying the damage the radiator and everything else seem to be intact the on thing thats broke is the pulley on the water pump, its like spinning freely and wobbling side to side from the one next to it?! i dont think its right any suggestion can you just put a new pulley on?

Your entire water circuit could be rusted, if I were you I would run a cleaning solution through the whole thing several times and replace the water pump + thermostat. Not that much cash for your peace of mind.

Hope that the coolant channels in the head are still ok.

Did you shear of the key on your crank?
Any damage to the Key grove?
If yes bad times, you need a new crank and key, probably a new pulley.

I had this on my old engine, with a broken keygrove the engine timing was really bad (load change moved the timing gear), and ign-timing was impossible to set right.
I ended up rebuilding the engine... Hurray!

I think you probably cooked the rubber layer in the harmonic balancer,
and now the outer pulley ring is spinning on the inner hub. You are going
to have to get the pulley off, and replace it with a good one.

jondee i think thats exactly what happened! it looks as if there is rubber undernath the outer layer of the pulley which is spinning! hopefully the load change wont have wont have moved the timing like fax said, the car is running fine only the coolant obviously isnt getting circulated enough! will there be any repercutions changing it to a single pulley as the air con has been taken out?!

Provided the crankshaft bolt is still tight, there should not be any damage
to the crank. Nor should it have any affect on the timing. For a
replacement, you can grab one off any 4AGE FWD Corolla that has the
correct number of grooves. Most will have dual pulleys of equal diameter.
You can leave the outer pulley on and not used, or you can machine it off.

What you will find, is that the offset of the pulley from the back face of the
hub is slightly different. Measure the old one, and either have the boss
shaved, or make a spacer washer (I can never remember which ??) so
that the new crank pulley lines up with the water pump etc.
