street quiet exhaust ?
Hi all

My loud exhaust start to piss me off. Not that it bothers me directly, but i think it is to loud for street driving. Even at low speeds, coming home at night can wake some neighbors and that's something i don't like doing.

ATM i have stock header, 2" ID pipes with two cans, mid and rear.
Intake is open, ITBs, but most of the noise is coming from exhaust.

Both cans are straight through open design, so not really helping to keep it silent.

I plan to make or buy new header, if needed put smaller pipes (1.75"?).

What to use in the middle ? AFAIK the middle can is most important for sound, after that, i will chose rear muffler.

Are there any suggestions, what type/model to use or make ?
As usual, i would like to keep as much performance as possible, but i must drive that noise to more acceptable levels.

Thanks

hi, i made my own and very very silent and still very good flow. you can see the catback (with stock midpipe) in my projects thread. it's a Simons muffler and very quiet.

If you want it really quiet, then I would replace the rear muffler with biggest diameter/volume resonated one that you can find. Resonated is way better for sound suppression then straight through. If you choose one big enough it will have little effect on hp, just more weight out back (not a bad thing per-se for a stripped hachi.

A pedal to steer the rear

got the same. Great exhaust and not too loud. Had the HKS hipower silent, and it wasn't silent at all. But the "legal" is pretty good. I can hear my ITB's now Cool

according to the HKS datasheets the Legal and silent HiPower are ~5dB apart... which equals to about 50% noisier...

Hey that was the muffler I sold you Big Grin (right?)

My exhaust has a beefy sound but its still pretty quiet... Only when you ram it up high you'll hear it a bit.
Nothing like a sport exhaust tho... It's the original exhaust with only 1 damper gone.

I will definitely middle can, it sound very metal and loud.
Rear exhaust was on friends car before, Civic TypeR K20 (2.0l) and the whole system was way more quite.
Hope the one, mid, can can make a difference.

If not, i will go "biggest possible" muffler way Smile

Thanks

p.s. AFAIK 10db is perceived as 2x louder, and it needs 10times more power.

Don't know about the power but the 2x for each 10dB is correct, hence my 50% more comment for 5dB

My mistake, i read your 50% as 2x louder. Sry Smile

To make it complete ( i just found on google Smile)
6db is gained with doubling sound pressure
3db is gained for doubling voltage
