new here, wondering about the ae86
hey guys, i'm new to this forum, and from what i've read the people on here are really knowledgeable and friendly.

i'm actually looking into purchasing an ae86, but am not sure what to look for here in the US. - from what i've read there are 2 kinds of ae86's; the SR5 and the GT-S, but "In America, the top-spec DOHC 4A-GEC AE86 was sold as the Corolla GT-S with the SOHC 4A-C AE86 bearing the Corolla SR5 tag"

I'm not too sure what that means. are all ae86's in the US badged as SR5? - I mean, it would be great if i was able to get the GT-S, i'd really like the extra HP, but would be more than appreciative to hear other members' opinions on the GT-S and the SR5.

I would really appreciate any and all input.

Thanks!

In the US the GTS was know as the AE88. Thats what's stamped on the firewall.
The GTS came with the DOHC 4AGE AFM Fuel injeted motor rated at 112HP IIRC. It also had different front spoilers, painted front and rear bumpers, break away power mirrors, rear disc brakes,Limited slip differential.
The SR5 came with the SOHC 4AC Carburated motor rated at somewhere around ?80-90HP? It had no front spoilers,no painted bumpers, manual mirrors, rear drum breaks. open rear.
There's more difference's, but that's all I could think of off the top of my head. Check with OLDSKEWLTOY. He would be able to tell you everything. Where are you from anyways? We have plenty of regional forums as well.

And the seats are different from the two, but thats not that big of a problem, I ahve an SR5 that I am working on as a project car, going to put a silvertop into it. But this isn't my topic.

anyway, tom hit most of the major differences but in the US it is rather hard to find a GTS version of the AE86 without spending a good amount of money

thanks for the replies, guys! i'm actually from california, the bay area to be exact. about 30 miles from san francisco.

i'm looking into getting an 85/86 model. i'm looking for the gt-s because of the fuel injection and the extra horse power.

if anyone out there has any more information on what to look for while purchasing an 86 corolla gt-s, i would really appreciate it. i've seen some 85 gt-s that have the limited slip differential but have manual windows.. which i don't mind, but i am wondering if that's a true gt-s.

thanks again, tomstwincam and evfan42 for your replies! i really appreciate them!

if anyone else out there has any tips or advice, i would really appreciate it!

thanks again!

It also depends: it's more or less depending on the extras the buyers had. My once-a-SR5 does have power windows, factory sunroof and airco. Smile

The GTS's had the different interior(front seats were different, the panels and rear seat are the same between the two, but are a different material). Very few 86' models had power windows. A few more had them in 87'. IIRC none of the 85's came with power windows. The GTS has a higher redline on the gauge cluster than the SR5.Have you checked http://www.hachiroku.net? That's close to you.

thanks again for the replies!

tomstwincam, you wouldn't happen to know the exact redline of the gts, would you?

right now i'm in the market and i want to make sure that when i look at a corolla, i know what i'm looking at, whether gts or sr5.

i'm told the first 7 of the vin are supposed to be "JT2AE88" but i'm not sure how accurate that it.

i appreciate all the replies and welcome any more!

--by the way, what's the average gas milage you guys are getting?

That's for an original GTS.
The redline on the gauge cluster goes from 7500rpm to 8000rpm IIRC.

hahahahahaha... saying hi to a guy who is less then 1000 miles away... on a forum half a world away!!!!

Tomstwincam gave some sound advice... with club4ag down, the most local based forum is
http://www.hachiroku.net
it is based out of Washington/Oregon, but many members from all over.

GTS should get 25+ on the highway, mileage less than that means there is a problem...

all US GTS model corollas begin with the VIN JT2AE88... many other markets did NOT!

found this online.... this is a side view of a stock 4AGE engine from a rwd Toyota(AE86 or AA63)

Another thing I forgot to mention is with these cars hitting the 20+years old mark you will be doing a lot of replacing of original parts when you get the car. Tune up,fluid flushes,bearings,brakes,etc.. It depends what kind of condition the owner keep the car in.
