What tires do you run?
Hey Everyone,

Okay, we got a nice thread going about oil, how about tires? What size tires do you like to run, whats your favorite street tire, whats your favorite track tire, what do you love for drifting?

I'm thinking about using Falken Ziex 512 tires for normal street use (195/60/14"). Anybody got experience with these tires? I need something that will keep me on the road in winter time aswell as summer timeSmile

I also hear good things about Toyo Proxys S02's and S03s but I cant find them in the right size for a good price yet.

Greetz,

On my first Coupe (the red one) I had Gislaveds fitted when I bought it, which was complete SHIT! Thank god they were worn out quickly...By that time I changed them for a set of Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position. You really can't believe what a difference they made! If you like to have a normal street tire, which also performs well on the track, this is a very good (but expensive) option. I run them in 195-50-15.

My second coupe is fitted with old 14" Pirelli P6000. Since they already were finished by the time I got tehe car I can't tell what they are like. But I've already got a set 15" with Bridgestone RE720 waiting for the car....

Why motorsports? Because other sports require only one ball!

I have Pirelli Drago (p5000) 14" up front and some sava tires (15") in the back. Both are 195 wide. Cant really tell how good they are, the suspension on my car is crappy as it is. I did notice that they like to squeal very easily, which I dont think is normal. Depending on which rims I find lugnuts for first I'll either be running 14" Toyo T1-S in the near future or 15" Pirelli p6000 (195 wide) in front and 15" continental tires in the back (205 wide)

What tires do you run?
Hi !

I was very lucky to get a tire sponsor the very first year im drifting seriously.

I run either Chinese made WANLI 185/60-14 or CONTINENTAL 185/60-14 for drifting - on 14x6 Mitsu Colt rims.

Street tires are Wanli´s in 195/45-15 in BBS 15x7 rims

As I would call myself a pretty good drifter & known to find the limits of the cars a drive & also the tires...

I´d like to tell you that studless snotires are among the best tires for testing drifting.

But when you are a litte more used to driving sideways...
I´d go for summer street tires in the sizes around
175/65-13 to 195/50-15.

I even tested Yokohama o32R´s this fall (R tires) in the width of
225/50-15 - whick even tey worked fine - even though i only have 125 hp.

I know that Japanese wonder driver Katsuhiro Ueo uses Adwan 185/60-14 on 14x8 rims.

Wanli's are considered cult drift tires here in the Netherlands. Very stiff sidewalls but absolutely no grip. Maybe a good choice for the set of driftrims.

I have Pirelli P5000 drago's on my car at the moment (15x7) rims. These are horrible! They squeel like nothing you ever heard before and do so long before the actual limit of the tires (not high at al) is approached. Some sort of warning before traction loss is fine, but this is just irritating.

Given the choice my next set of tires wil be the toyo T1S's in the 195-50-15 size. At the pricepoint these are selling at now, few tires get even close. Grip in al wheather excellent, whatever some people may think. The problem with these tires is that the sidewall is not all that stiff. I think this is a compromise that toyo made willingly. U lose some of the crispness at turn in, but gain much needed comfort at the street. Then when you need to lose someone one a backroad, the grip is there to do it.
Also these are not circuit tires, you will destroy them if you heat them up to much.
The other option that you have at that pricepoint is the yokohama A539. These have poorer wet weather performance, slightly less grip, but much stiffer sidewalls. They'll hold up to the abuse of a trackday.

All the other tires on the market to day don't come close to the value for money of these two IMHO.

A pedal to steer the rear

A 185/60 R14 is about the optimum tyre size for the AE86.

Since the car is light, it doesn't need a bigger footprint and the 185 will get up to temperature and give lots of feedback to aid learning control on the limits.

I currently use 185/60 14 on 7" MA61 rims. That's an OK setup, though I'd like 14x8 with 185/60 for a little more stretch to stiffen up the feel.

I may be getting 15x8's with either 195/50 or 185/55 tyres. I also have some 13's kicking around with 165 or 175's for a bit of super-slippy fun...

I get my tyres for free from my used tyre skip sponsorship, so cannot be too choosey. I like to run something harder on the back (eg budget Kumho, Cooper Cobra, Firestone F-560), otherwise I am changing the rears every few days....

For track days, theres really only one way to go, and thats 15" anything other than that stinks when aiming for fast lap´s.
Drifting though is best when using 14" and cheapest Smile

I just bought 4 yoko a-038 and i cant wait to see how they drift, hahaha....
