Smallport coil

Does anyone know if the smallport coil is a direct replacement
for an AE86 coil?
I'd like to use one as l'm using a smallport distributor which uses a
cap with the thinner leads.

I'm a bit confused. If you are using the smallport distributor you should also be using the smallport ECU since it runs a different ignition system
to the AE86 (VAST vs ESA). If that is the case I would assume you would also need the matching igniter for that system, making the point a bit moot.
So what's your setup like?
FWIW, a coil is a pretty simple thing.. you could probably get away with mixing and matching it.

The coil just operates on a pulse from the igniter and would be interchangeable if not for the connector to the igniter (directly linked with a ring connector v. through a harness connector), which is an easy fix with some mild rewiring if you don’t have a matching set.

I'm using Freedom ecu that allows different configurations, l was quite
surprised to find the engine runs the same with any 16v distributor.
From a wiring perspective l guess the coils are the same?
