Rear axle/diff has gone...
Ivan141 Wrote:Unless its the first time in yonks that you take them out, then it can be a bitch of a job. Make sure you have a slide hammer or something improvised that resembles one when you take on this job. If they have been out recently you can often take them out with a few gentle taps of a rubber mallet (or just by hand), but if they are rotted in there it will be much much harder (the bearings are 3+ cm's wide, that's a lot of surface).

My guess is that they have been out before since the diff (no LSD) has been welded. Wink

R&P? Undecided

It was easy to remove the axles. 4 screws.
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Rear axle/diff has gone...]

One little pull and they slided out. Big Grin
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - Rear axle/diff has gone...]

With the pinion in place in the axle-house there seem to be NO movement in sideways of the bearings, so I really cant determine wether there is something wrong with the bearings. They seem to be tight and sliding well.

However the ring is slightly damaged.

BUT the pinion is grinded down to thin sharp razor-blades. Sad

So, now is the question, what do I do now?

1. Buy new bearings (doesnt cost much) even though they seem fine?
2. Buy new pinion?
3. Buy new final gear kit (expensive!!!)?

I dont know what caused this, and dont really want to buy parts if something else is causing this. But there are really no other parts back there can be the problem?

that pinion not work. SO you need find ne gear kit. Alwasy their are pair and need bee to geather..

your pinion/ring are not correct position. they have so bad wear and not usable anymore. New used set or New kit and put to geather whit correct speks...

You can see lot of wear on the ring outside.. the contact should bee in middle and i think your was wrong place

Both are dead. you need a new gear kit for sure.

Like said corolla4agze, the contact point between the pinion and the ring should be in the middle, but it seems obvious that on your's it was completly on the outside of the ring Confused

Yeap, they´re fooooked.
Buy bearings and a good 2nd hand gearset or a new one and you probably want to go solid spacer, once you, or whoever is doing it, pulled everything apart... Wink

Thanks, yes I have now sent an email to Weir to see how much it would cost, compared to Toyota original or used. Smile

Toyota wanted about 700 Euro, Weir wants about 350 Euro.

But a guy in Germany who builds gearboxes for racing cars could build new ones for 100 Euro.

So I will go for the cheapest in this case, if its built for racing, it will be good enough for me. Smile
