OST-050 - a VERY special build
Been a while....

part of this build is a complete restoration of the engine back to the condition(appearance) it was 32 years ago. And in that vain I've notice that the block[s] I've worked never looked like they carried paint originally.... and apparently they DIDN'T!

From 2 very reliable sources I've found out that Toyota didn't paint their engine blocks back then, but had the blocks phosphate dipped, that is how Toyota treated the blocks. So in that vain, this block is getting a very similar treatment, the coating on this block will mimic the original, but be a bit harder, longer lasting.

Along with the blocks restoration, the head, including the entire intake, right down to the T/B, has been sent out to be soda-blasted. Once the head is back I'll begin the port work.

before....

Soda blasting is similar to other surface cleaning(sand blasting, bead blasting) but is completely harmless and water soluble - cleans up with water. I'll have an after pic in about a week.

I did clean and test the AAV (warm-up valve under T/B)... it appears to work...

with the block prepped for a new coating, and the head and intake off getting soda blasted... the internals wait on a familiar Wink shop cart...

from another forum Wrote:Are those stock rods with press-fit 18mm wrist pins? I can't remember if those 10:1 pistons had 18mm or 20mm pins.
The 10:1 pistons were available in BOTH 18mm, and 20mm wrist pins........

These are 18mm wrist pins...

oldeskewltoy Wrote:These are 18mm wrist pins...

and a bit lighter too Wink

I decided along with the new 10:1 pistons, that the light weight wrist pins will work nicely in this engine. The 23+ gram (nearly an ounce) saving will help allow the engine to accelerate/decelerate quicker, as well as lower the stress on the rod.

btw.....not sure anyone picked out the older design head gasket......... That type (from Toyota) hasn't been around in quite a while...

more to come...... Hurray!

Well... some good news, and some not so good news......

The not so good news first... The soda blasting was nearly a total waste of time, money, and energy. The manifold, t/b, and TVIS plates will all need to be glass beaded. Crying

Glass beading means that the T/B, and the TVIS plates need to be completely disassembled prior to blasting to avoid the glass beads remaining and damaging the rotaional surfaces of these pieces. The AAV can not be fully disassembled, so I've been working with aluminum jelly to get the surface as "bright" as I can. Once the T/B come back, I'll see how close the two are to each other and "adjust" as needed.

I've recently found out that Toyota did not paint their blocks, but had them dipped into a black phosphate solution. This information comes from 2 highly reliable sources - one worked for TRD back in the early 1990s, the other is VERY well known to the Toyota, and 4AGE community.

So I spent a few days calling machine shops in and around the greater Portland area, and found no one doing phosphate dipping of engine blocks. There were a few smaller shops that did offer a black phosphate dip for hardware, but they couldn't physically dip, or coat the block. So with a phosphate dip out of the question, I found another solution...... Love it!

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - OST-050 - a VERY special build]

This isn't flat paint, nor is it semi flat paint, in fact this isn't paint at all, it is far thinner then paint (.25-1.5 mils thick, vs 1.0-3.5 for most spray paints)

The only downside to this coating is its total curing time of 3 weeks!! Angry

more to come....... Hurray!

That finish is cool! It's kind of like a Parkerized finish.
