up/down play on the turbo shaft is normal (a little bit only), in & out there should be very little play. If the turbo is shot you will notice it in your exhaust gasses (burning oil), and in your intake piping (oil filled). And yes that is a bad thing...

UP/DOWN their is a small amount but very small .in out their is none .have not took the intake piping off yet but will have a look ,the exhaust smoke is clean but on start up it is a bit wet ,could this be from half filling the petrol tank over the winter and build up of wather ???
thanks for info, at least i dont have to worry bout getting new turbo at the mo it dont look it in the picks but it is very big and im sure their is a nice big price that go's with it Sad
cheers paddy Thumbs up! Respect! Thumbs up!

Startup fumes are pretty normal even without turbo. Even ok engines will puff a little at startup. They say you know it's the turbo causing the smoking if the smoking stops when you rev the engine up a bit above idle.
