The goal is a cam I can twist to 6000 rpm(makes peak hp about 5600) We anticipate a duration of 280+ [215-225(@ .050")], planned lift is to be about .450".

Once I know the current cam specs, I'll report them... but since the centerlines are 110, then they likely are short duration cams - likely around 195-205(@ .050"), that would limit overlap, and allow for a smooth idle, and would go along with the low compression - the original engine was 9:1. I do "know" (alleged) the specs on the original engine 162whp @4400, and 214#/ft @ 3600. That peak hp also tends to favor a shorter duration cam

* - It's tough to compare quad valve, with 2 valve when it comes to camshafts. Typically a 2 valve needs more "overall" duration then a quad valve engine. For example... stock 4AG cams are 240/232 [204/198(@.050")], and they pull to about 6600-6700. The same "overall" duration in a V8 may only pull to 4500. Now a big part of it has to do with ramps. 4AG ramp rates are much high/faster then a flat tappet V8.

For example... a Poncam is 264 total, and 222 @ .050". A V8 cam having 300 overall duration will "only" have 224" @ .050". The ramp rates in most V8s are softer.

I'm relying on my engine builders to help me get what I'm after... good power.. with just enough lope that you know there is a cammed Hemi under the hood.... Angel

Hope there aren't any nasty surprises with the chassis/body - unlike with my Z

I got VERY lucky.....

Although it looks as though someone did go hammer(ballpeen) happy in the tunnel???

Pity about the tunnel but really doesn't look too bad apart from that.

You definitely got lucky with that one. I'm surprised it hadn't already been turned into a hotrod before you bought it.

so back to the engine.....

Typically when you order new pistons, you plan for an overbore...

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - I bought a Hemi - Project Lit'lphant]

The cylinder liners are in very good condition, with no ridge at all, and only the very top of the bores no longer showing hone marks.... but the liners are likely a few ten thousandths different... so the intention at the shop now is to re-hone, and set all bores to within one ten thousandth (.0001"). With that final figure, I'll pass that along to Traum pistons so we can have the pistons made to the bores, instead of the other way around....

This was done about a week back... the results were all the liners were nominally under 87mm, so all the liners will be honed to 87.0008mm, or 3.4252"

and a bit more... note a small "squish" band around the entire piston... also note the valve reliefs are symmetrical, and yet the valves in the head are not....

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - I bought a Hemi - Project Lit'lphant]

Those domes are pretty shallow... estimated to be 13cc... (back in 2019)

OST Wrote:also note the valve reliefs are symmetrical, and yet the valves in the head are not....

This has everything to do with overall piston balance... if the pistons were to only have the intake relief, they would be much tougher to balance, BUT they would also be very expensive, as the engine would need 4 sets of 2 pistons. This is because the wrist pin is offset - you can see this in the side view of the piston. My new pistons will have a dome of 21cc, and the valve reliefs will be .060" deeper.... Smile

Well... word has come from Traum piston....

oldeskewltoy Wrote:Those domes are pretty shallow... estimated to be 13cc...

Actually... they were 10cc, so static CR on the 5V is(was) under 9:1.... Sad

Thank you Traum Piston - With their help, this is what my 5V will be running..... instead of 10cc, this piston has a 21cc dome

[Image: AEU86 AE86 - I bought a Hemi - Project Lit'lphant]

10.30-10.35:1, with slightly deeper (.060") valve pockets. Because the piston has an offset wrist pin, essentially that is 2 sets of 4.

And the last bit of news.... I spoke to the cam grinder this morning.. I have the specs on the stock 5V-EU cam.........

intake overall duration 240 ([email protected]"), and exhaust 247([email protected]") lobe lift is .240", and as I said before 110 centers.

more to come.... Hurray!

Looking good. It's hard to tell from the pictures so this might be a non issue but the spark plug tip looks very close to the new dome

offset and enlarged bolt holes

Are you saying the flywheel from a 1SU Toyota engine is 115 teeth, and 11.6" in diameter??

Also are you saying the offset is correct? Bolt hole enlargement shouldn't be an issue

The 1s flywheel sticks out 2mm more.
I didn't notice any differences in the teeth and diameter.
I'm from Russia, my English is bad.
I'll take a video of how it works on the engine
