DIV 1 rally/track suspension setup
Now a thread for the suspension setup
Again div 1 rules
*No coilovers and cambers plates
15 inch tire 195/50/15

for use on track and bad roads(aka rally roads )seems like an impossible combo ...
so 75% of time track and later 25% rally

Now i dont remember who or when it was posted but someone said the Escort mk2 setup is the same for the ae86 and proven alot of times
will try to find more on it tomorrow

Normally i would not have changed this for now but,the cm from the ground ,Diameter from wheel and other is measuredand written in the vas book(rally book that is added for the normal inspection)

Not impossible at all, and a ford Escort setup is a VERY good place to start.. Rally winning good under lots of Irish rally cams.

You can send your stock struts to a company in Ireland and have them converted (or drop ship some you source in Ireland).

A softer 1.7Hz setup will be 95% as effective as a 2.5Hz 8/6 setup on track. But the 8/6 setup will be 50% as effective as the 1,7Hz setup during rallies.

Thanks for the reply Smile
Im in luck then, the mk1 & mk2 are really loved over here(80% of the historics cars are mk1/mk2)
I think i know a shop who is very good with suspension on mk1/mk2,will try to make a visit.

8/6 would probably kill me on the roads Smile
So 1.7hz will be good on track and good during rally's?
is that 5.5/4 spring rate then?

for the shocks then i think the group4 bilsteins are a good choice then?

front:looks like you can chose Bilstein front insert 300/70,260/60
http://www.grp4fabrications.com/advanced...&image.y=0
rear:Grp4 Bilstein rear turret shock
http://www.grp4fabrications.com/product_...cts_id=316

Looks like you need to customise them yourself.
here you can even buy ae86 strut
http://www.grp4fabrications.com/product_...cts_id=493

How much would the car be lower then,
Because I was thinking of leaving everythings else like the strut bars, panhard original for now.Would this still be safe/good?
But still already thinking what would be best:
I really would like the T3 parts but they come with a helmet and that is fforbidden in DIV1.(maybe if i ask with rubbers they would make it dont know)
other options are whiteline and maybe trd

I doubt a rally setup would lower the car much.

What exactly is the ruling on coilovers? You need to run stock diameter springs?

If I were you I would simply copy the Escort Mk2 tarmac rally spring rates. The cars are similar enough to get you in the ballpark. Then drop the Front shorty bilsteins in a modified cartridge . You need special slider seals that guide the shock body inside the strut.. but you do get upsidedown dampers as a result. That's the modification that Gp4 does.. no idea if you could diy that, but I'm mighty interested in having a look at how they do it.

I think the Escort rear shock will plonk right into the AE86 with minor modifications. You can also use the stock AE86 bilstein and have them revalved (ask around the paddock) to mk2 specs.

Forget about the T3 stuff.. no real advantage to be had for you.

No coilovers what so ever,as long as they look stock its ok

Im no expert with those shocks so i will need to ask like you say i think Smile

So im better of with buying a good set of bushings then?
Something i hear alot is a thicker front strutbar.

Stock springs are coilovers... but as usual you need them to be stock diameter.

Best option is to have some custom springs wound at a spring factory with custom rates. Unless there is something similar already floating around.

A big front swaybar/no rear swaybar setup is usually fastest on an AE86.

With most rates that come close to working including 4/3..

I'm using around F4/R4.2kg springs (around 1.9Hz). I calculated from the spring dimensions so it's maybe not 100% accurate.
I removed rear sway bar to have more traction at thight corner exit.
You might need it for rallying...
Especially on gravel/sand it is a good setup, on asphalt it's too soft.
Since I do not run actual rallies, only regularity, I prefer the "gravel" spec

I did one VAS regularity during a short rally with OE rear sway bar still connected and it s*cked big time at corner exit on throttle Banging head
For high speed corners rear sway bar increases yaw repsonse at steer in, but in slow corners the loss of traction is huge.
I run standard vehicle height. I like to try 0.5-1 cm down on the front, but since I have fixed OE struts I can not.

If you combine track and rally I would recommend to make at least adjustable sway-bar for easy change.
