Another rusty old carina.
Aaah well I know it's not an AE86, but I figure one or two people here might be interested in seeing my carina.

And whoring my project out to various forums is easier than actually doing any work on the car.

It's a 1983 AA60 2 door carina, that came with standard 3AU, T40, and T series drum rear.

However it'll be running a few different bits to give it a bit of a kick in the arse.

rebuilt 200hp 1998 beams 3SGE engine from SW20 MR2, with a few mods
close ratio altezza 6 speed gearbox
MA45 F series live axle with 4.3 ratio cusco 2 way altezza LSD, adjustable panhard rod.
front roll centre adjusters + AE85 steering arms, AA63 front struts
AA63 EFI fuel tank
impul prospoke -2mm offset 15x7 wheels
Altezza radiator, intake manifold, exhaust, rear water outlet, sump. (all bolts to FWD engine to convert it to RWD)
standard ST141 engine mounts and crossmember
'twin square' lights/gaurds conversion

And a few other things that dont come to mind just yet.
A few details have yet to be finalised, like what brakes will be best to run.
I've got some SW20 twin pot calipers lying around, so will probably go with those. Definitely 4 wheel vented discs though, this is gonna see a bit of time on the track and needs to be able to stop!
Or suspension, I'll most likely be going with AE92 TRD adjustable front shocks, custom coilovers, and a few other similar bits. However nothings set in stone at this stage, I'll decide this bit last I think.

It's been a remarkably 'this bolts straight onto that' sort of project so far though, which is part of the reason why I bought a carina... It's so much easier to build up to the level that I want it at, compared to AE86 etc.
It's pretty much a small big car, rather than a big small car, so I've got lots of goodies from supras etc which will bolt straight on. And although it's a little bigger, it should still weigh less than a tonne when it's done hopefully.

It's still a work in progress, as you can see. Smile
Am currently stripping engine bay out for bare metal respray. It'll be painted white again, minus the horrible racing stripes kindly left by the previous owner. Undecided

Nice grille! Thumbs up!
Without the frontdam the car looks a bit like the DeLorean! Big Grin
And the coupe looks a bit like an inbetween of the 2 door and 3 door hachi. Wink

Mux: I know, but that's a long term project. Tongue

Haha yep my front air damn is a bit munted, hence it not being on in the photo.

Yep I like the look of the coupes, I first saw one at a drift day a few years ago, and thought "what the hell is that?! I want!" And it wasnt until about another year later that I found out that it was a toyota carina. I never would have guessed!

I've NEVER seen a RWD carina on the roads here, so every time I tell someone that I'm working on a carina, they think I'm a bit loco! probably am. Banging head

Roman,

Until banpei bought his carina I think I would have had the same reaction. Carina's are booring FWD family cars.. but in RWD configuration they are sleepers with potential!

Yeah man, you just need to have a look on youtube for 'carina drift' or similar to see that they've got some good potential. Smile

Mostly cars from New Zealand! oddly enough. haha.

i'd love a 3sge beams engine for my ae86 Smile your carina looks alot like a te71. I think most of the RWD cars from that age have a similiar bottom

Yeah here's a pic of one that's a little less.... ghetto than what mine is at the moment haha.

You're right, it does look a bit like a TE71!

And BTW, I've got a beams engine in my MR2 daily driver too.

With standard engine and only mod being TOMS extractors, it was good for 127kw at the wheels with a 12:1 AFR. I'm hoping for similar figures from my carina, it will have more drivetrain loss, but also slightly more power. Would make a bit more if I could lean it out, but there's no cheap/easy solution for an ECU for these engines. Sad
