Another danish restoration
So, the next task was the rear parcel tray. I bought a used one with a mission to restore it my way.

The one I got had the two classic 6x9 speaker holes in it. Also it was a bid rugged around the edges. So to make it more stiff I decided to go with a layer of fibre glass.

Here is what I did.

The 30 years old parcel tray with holes in it.

I pulled the old cloth of and torched the rest with a heat gun. Finally I took a metal brush a removed the last of the old black cloth.

I covered the parcel tray in a layer of fibre glass. I had made templates for the holes to avoid it to sink in. Once dried I flipped it over and put a bit of polyester in the old holes. Flipped it again at grinded the small bumbs down to get an even surface.

Then I trimmed the edges and glued a new piece of felt to the tray using spray glue. Flipped it over and did the back as well. I bought 1mm dark brown felt from eBay UK.

Put it back in the car, and it looks really good. The picture I have taken doesn't do it any justice.

So now I have a parcel tray that fits with the rest of the interior and it is not flimsy at all like before. It is quite time consuming. You literally have to wait for glue to dry, but it is well worth the effort :-)

Hi
Searching my old e-mails I can see I paid €140 for them. I bought them together with a lot of other FRP parts.
They a home made replicas of some sort. They look great and they fit the OEM bumber which is a plus for me.

Nice going Duze, just one tip for you: Do NOT store loose shit in your spare wheel well. It will bounce around, damage the paint job, and that might start rust since it is one of the points where moisture tends to go. If you want to use it as storage, line it with something.

That is an excellent question.

The plan the past 5 years was to get it where it is today. A project like this is never "done", but I'm quite happy with the way it is now.

My short term plans:
I have a set of fibre glass side skirts I will be installing within a month or so. And I have some minor repairs to do. Nothing serious. Other than that I just plan to do a lot of driving this summer as well.

My future plans:
At some point I would like to restore a 4AGE that came with the car. I have painted the block and that is about it. The rest of the engine is taken a part, stored in boxes. The engine in the car is running fine so I am not in any hurry with the extra engine.

But why don't you make your car faster??? I bet you are wondering.
Well, I have another 16 valve car waiting for me which is much faster than the AE86 ever will be. However I need a poop load of cash, for registration taxes, and some more space before anything happens regarding that. So I'll just keep the old Corolla stock for now. Oh, and the other car is a '90 Corvette C4 if you were curious ;-)

So basically I have AE86 which requires next to no maintenance which I can drive around all summer. Just the way I like it.

Just looking through your resto, looks good. I notice you have a FRP bootlid and your using shocks and a catch in it. Did you drill the wholes to fit these yourself or were there nuts moulded into it already?

I have one i'm fitting, I was planning to drill holes and fit riv nuts but i'm worried that the boot won't be strong enough and they will rip out/crack

Hi
The boot lid had nuts impeded into it. Both for the catch and the shocks. I only had to drill a small hole for the lock.
I found some shock for a Corolla hatchback which fits perfectly. However they are a bit to strong so someday I'll knock my self over when opening it.

If you use a bit of strong glue, perhaps even polyester, together with the nut rivet it might hold. I don't see why not. Good luck.
