AE86 Models and types ( zenki / kouki )
robokill Wrote:Ok here is some info for all the new peepz with the term
...AE stand for its type in this case Corolla (also seen on newer models)
86 is the digit number which keeps him unique to its brothers (newer FWD corolla's)...

Not completly right. The E in AE means that it´s a Corolla, but the A stands for the used enginefamily. The 8 in AE86 stands for the generation of Corolla and the 6 for the subtype.
In case of the E8 there is a big family of Corollas. They are all E8, but with different engines (3A, 4A --> AE8_ , 2E --> EE8_ , 1C --> CE8_ ) and different bodys and subtypes (AE80, AE82...).
This system works on all Toyotas. For example the current Corolla TSport got the 2ZZ-GE-engine and is the 12. generation so it´s type is ZZE12.

In australia they were manufactered as an AE86 (not AE85) even though it comes with:

Engine: 4AC (single cam 8v)
Brakes: solid front discs rear drums
Interior: Same interior as the AE85 in Japan
Wheels: 13 x 5
Diff: S-Series 3.9 Live axle
Suspension: Same as AE85

Its basically the same specs as the AE85 wheras instead of a 3A we have the 4AC. It was delivered and produced in 83 and production ended in 85. (Zenki Era)

Only released in Levin 3 Door

Instead of calling it by its proper name (Toyota Corolla Levin) Toyota placed Zenki Trueno taillights on the back so in Australia its known as the Toyota Sprinter. (When technically its a Corolla Levin)

Came out with the 5 slot grill.

They are pretty much the same, except the turn-signal lights and trueno inlet are a bit higher. Smile
I thought the Initial D trueno is zenki.

And as far as I know Zenki and Kouki US bumpers are the same. You can tell the difference by the taillights. Smile

teorically my Ae86 it's a kouki:

Outside color doesn't say too much unless you are absolutely sure it is still the same color. Paint schemes are mostly the same across the years... However your paintscheme should be 1987 only:

Basically there are a few things which idendify the kouki trim on a Levin:
- plasic mouldings on the fenders
- turn signals going to the side of the front bumper
- glass grille
- taillighs lights got whitelines
- Interior got tweed
- Dash got white vertical stripes

And there are many more small details...

GTS and SR5 is almost the same: only the seats are different. AFAIK the GTS seats were not available as option for the SR5 so they must have been swapped.

Swapping seats is about 15 minutes work, so I recon that the previous owner (or before that) already swapped the seats. Wink
