The protrusion thing is ugly, but might be a good solution, this way you increase the oil the differential can get without making the oil level go up.
And the mod doesn't include expensive oil pumps and coolers.
After the temp sensor, and the conclusions about temp, the protrusion might be my next differential mod. Smile

how about getting a good thermometer and checking the oil temps?
you could stick it in the oil fill plug easy eoungh ya?

backlash and preload is very crutial to make the rear end to work right
or should i say to keep from blowing up
its takes a touch of magic
pinion depth is the hardest part to set up due to the crush washer
i reuse the crush washers most of the time because thats what causes all the problems
i set the LSD to FEEL
yes i use my hands only
but then i tripple check it with a dial mic so everything is with in factory specs

i have done about 10~15 diffs this way
i only had problems with 1 for sure
but that was at the track about 6 months after i did the install
it was already pretty worn when i installed the new KAAZ lsd unit

You re-use the crush collars? or do you mean the pinion depth spacers?
Cant imagine what the point of a crush collar would be if you can reuse it.

If you read above, that is indeed my next mod, Smile
I will connect it to a water temp gauge, since it is not suposed to go over 100ยบ celcius (like the water in a radiator)

yea i reuse the crush sleeve because you have to set it up 2 or 3 times if you use a new one
because it does not seat properly the first time you set it up
you have to dissable the whole unit and then check it again
a real PITA

also ever heard the term "work hardens" thats what happens to the crush sleeve to begin with
its not made from aluminum ya know

The term work hardens refers to metal parts that have wearing surfaces, like the ring and pinion gear teeth. Microscopic irregularities get pushed back due to the rubbing and over time this compacts the outer molecular structure a bit (hardening it). I dont see how this applies to a crush collar.

That being said I do think that correctly setting a new crush collar should be possible (first-time right). Maybe the bearings arent seated completely when this goes wrong. Having looked into this I guess you could reuse the crush collar if your really carefull not to re-crush it during installation. But when you use new bearings you can be sure that they will have different tolerances, so the old setting of the crush collar might not be correct anymore.
I read up about tapping both ends of the pinion with a hammer after setting the crush collar to make sure the bearings are seated correctly... if the preload is off after that you could re-set the preload and be done with it.

yea i am not 100% sure
but i think when you slow press something it work hardens
kinda like cold rolled steel

i am just posting what works for me
i have found that many more problems arise when trying to set up a new crush sleeve

Cant say I like the way that the protrusion looks, maybe it is done this way due to clearance issues. My guess is that it acts like an oilpan so the pickup always has enough oil to keep the gears lubricated. The website mentions a 400cc increase in oil capacity.
Couldnt really see how the oil is routed outside of the axle.

This was somthing I was going to do to my N2. He has winged the casing so it can carry more oil, much like you would do with a normal sump pan.

The two lines running into the casing will be for the inclusion of a stand alone diff oil cooler. You would require a small electric pump to suck oil out, pass it through the cooler and then feed it back into the casing under pressure. This should drastically improve the lubrication as well.

I have been toying with making my own cheap diff cooler kit - but havent got around to it yet. Only requires basic components.
