20V Black Top timing belt on Silvertop Engine
Right, here's the problem, i've been sent a Blacktop timing belt (by accident) to fit to my Silvertop engine and i've read elsewhere they have a slight difference (one has 110 teeth the other has 111 and is a little thicker). What I want to know is, would this make a lot of difference? Can I still use the blacktop belt on my silvertop engine? I'm unsure as to whether or not teeth make a difference, I think it's meant to be tension that's important?

any advice given would be appreciated.

Thumbs up!

I'm not sure, but don't do it. It'll advance camshaft timing and if it's an interference engine, valves heat pistons.

Quote:Located at the front of the engine, the timing belt is driven by the crankshaft sprocket and drives the camshaft sprocket. Some engine designs use the timing belt to also turn another shaft that drives the ignition system. As the camshaft is turned, it opens and closes the engine valves to let the air and fuel mixture into the engine and the exhaust gases out. Installing the belt even one tooth out of alignment will cause the engine to run poorly. If the belt is more than a couple teeth out of alignment or it breaks, then the engine's valves will be open at the wrong time and the valves could be hit by the engine's pistons. This bends the valves and requires replacement of the damaged parts.

I've been advised by my man at Toyota that it's perfectly safe as the 20V is non interference and the reason the belt is tighter is due to the hydraulic tensioner on the black top. The silvertop is a manual tensioner and doesnt require the belt to be as tight but can still use it.
